Tunisia to probe attempt to assassinate the president

18 June 2021; MEMO: Tunisia's Ministry of Justice yesterday announced that it was opening an investigation into the attempted assassination of President Kais Saied.

"The Minister of Justice authorized the Public Prosecution, represented by the Public Prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Tunis, to conduct the necessary inquiries and investigations into the circulated news about an attempt to assassinate the President of the Republic," a ministry statement said.

Tunisia to reopen economy despite hospital strain

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — Tunisian authorities plan to reopen the economy next week amid public pushback against virus restrictions, even as the country’s hospitals are struggling for enough oxygen to treat a persistently high number of COVID-19 patients.

Tunisia shut down shops and restaurants and banned all sports and cultural events last week as the prime minister warned that the health system risked collapsing. Houses of prayer were also closed – including for the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan that starts Thursday.

Tunisia announces one-week lockdown including Eid

08 May 2021; MEMO: Tunisian Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi on Friday announced a seven-day comprehensive quarantine, including Eid Al-Fitr, and closing places of worship.

Mechichi announced in a press conference that the government had approved a general lockdown in the country from 9-16 May, including Eid Al-Fitr, to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The Tunisian PM called on citizens to abide by the decision and not to exchange visits during the religious holiday.

Tunisia president calls for holding 'different kind' of dialogue to end crisis

06 May 2021; MEMO: Tunisian President Kais Saied said he is ready to engage in dialogue, with conditions, to get the country out of the ongoing crisis, after he rejected initiatives calling for a national dialogue.

The Tunisian presidency said in a statement on Tuesday that "President Kais Saied met today at the Carthage Presidential Palace with Secretary-General of the People's Movement, Zuhair Maghzawi" to discuss the political, economic and social impasse and ways to overcome it.

Tunisia: president warns against danger of fragmenting state from within

Saied made his comment after meeting with some army, National Guard, and police officers at the closed military zone in Chaambi Mountain, Anadolu has reported.

Tunisian gov't vows all means to avoid oxygen shortage in hospitals

TUNIS, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi said on Sunday that all means will be provided for the health ministry to avoid oxygen shortage in the country's hospitals.

During his visit to the ministry, Mechichi chaired a meeting dedicated to examining practical solutions for overcoming the lack of medical oxygen in hospitals.

The Tunisian government head called for solutions by importing oxygen from neighboring countries, according to a government statement.
