Indian police shoot dead rape suspects as they try to flee

NEW DELHI, Dec 6 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Police in the southern Indian state of Telangana on Friday shot dead four suspects who had been arrested over a gang rape and murder case that caused a national furore.

There has been public anger across the country since the burnt body of the 25-year-old rape victim, a veterinarian by profession, was found last month near Hyderabad.

The gruesome details of the crime provoked massive anger in the country, where more than 100 rapes happen daily.

Hyderabad, Dec 1 (PTI) Amid growing public anger over the rape and murder of a woman veterinarian near here, residents of the colony where she stayed, on Sunday turned away political leaders who wanted to call on her family, while the police is set to seek custody of the accused for further probe.

The residents locked the main gate of the colony at Shamshabad on the outskirts of the city and held aloft placards that read 'No Media, No Police, No Outsiders, - No sympathy, only action, justice.'

India: Woman vet raped before being killed: 4 people arrested

Hyderabad/New Delhi, Nov 29 (PTI) A woman veterinarian whose charred body was found here was raped before being killed, police said, even as a Telangana Minister stoked a controversy asking why she had not called police immediately.

Police said four people have been arrested in connection with the rape and murder, which has sparked a national outrage.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's son and Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao said he would "personally monitor the case."

India: Woman raped, murdered by boyfriend on her birthday

Hyderabad, Nov 28 (PTI) A woman was allegedly raped and murdered by her boyfriend on her birthday in Warangal district, and the accused who tried to project the death as a natural one has been arrested, police said on Thursday.

The woman turned 19 on Wednesday, and the man called up her, and she left her house that night telling her parents she was going to a temple, but she went with her boyfriend, they said.

India: School headmaster held on rape charges

Hyderabad, Nov 23 (PTI) The Headmaster of a school and his wife were arrested here following allegations of rape levelled against him by a minor girl student, police said on Saturday.

A case was registered over allegations of rape and forcing girl students to work, they said.

The girl complained on Friday and a case relating to rape charges and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act was registered.

The principal and his wife have been arrested and sent to judicial custody, they added.

India: Durga devotee steals her silver crown at temple in T'gana

Hyderabad, Nov 21 (PTI) A 'devotional' thief decamped with the silver crown of a deity at a temple here after offering prayers with folded hands with a video of his act caught on CCTV camera going viral, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred at the Goddess Durga temple in Abids on wednesdy evening when there was none in the temple, they said adding a case had been registered and investigations were on.

India: Telangana bypolls: TRS wins Huzurnagar assembly seat

Hyderabad, Oct 24 (PTI) The ruling TRS in Telangana on Thursday won the October 21 bypoll to Huzurnagar Assembly constituency by a margin of more than 43,000 votes over its nearest Congress rival N Padmavati Reddy.

The Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao-led party maintained a consistent lead over the opposition Congress during the counting of votes from the first round.

TRS nominee S Saidi Reddy polled 1,13,095 while 69,737 votes were polled in favour of the Congress candidate, according to figures put out by the Chief electoral Officer.

India: Man lynched on suspicion oftemple theft in Telangana

Hyderabad, Oct 15 (PTI): A 25-year-old man was allegedly lynched by a group of villagers on suspicion of committing a theft at a temple in Nizamabad district, police said on Tuesday.

The man, who works as a mason, was on Monday thrashed by the group after he was caught allegedly trying to steal from the place of worship, a senior police official told PTI.

The villagers later informed the police who got the man shifted to the government hospital in Nizamabad but he died without responding to treatment, the official said.

University professor held for alleged links with maoists

Hyderabad, Oct 10 (PTI) An Assistant Professor of city-based Osmania University was on Thursday arrested for suspected links with maoists, police said.

K Jagan, also a member of Viplava Rachayitula Sangham (Virasam), a revolutionary writers' association, was picked up from his residence here by a police team from Jogulamba Gadwal district.

He was arrested in connection with a case registered against him under relevant sections of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) over suspected maoists links, they said.

India: Kashmir leaders to be released soon: Madhav

Hyderabad, Oct 5 (PTI) Senior BJP leader Ram Madhav has said leaders who have been placed under house arrest in Jammu and Kashmir after abrogation of Article 370 by the Centre, will be released soon and they can resume their "normal" political activity.

Speaking at 'Jana Jagaran Sabha' on the Centre's decision to revoke special status of J&K granted under Article 370 on Friday, the BJP general secretary said once Governors rule is lifted and legislature takes over, constitutional entities such as Commissions for SC, Women and Minorities will be set up in the region.
