Qatar ready to mediate between Iran, EU, US

21 May 2022; MEMO: Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani announced on Wednesday that his country is ready to mediate between Iran, the European Union and the US regarding the nuclear deal, Anadolu Agency reported.

This came during a joint press conference held in Berlin with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who confirmed that Qatar would play a "central role" in Germany's new energy strategy.

Qatar Emir wants World Cup visitors to respect his country's culture

20 May 2022; MEMO: Qatar hopes to welcome the world to Doha for the soccer World Cup but also "we expect and we want people to respect our culture", Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani said on Friday in Berlin when asked about gay people attending the tournament, Reuters reports.

The Gulf, Muslim-majority State will host the first World Cup in the Middle East for a month from late November.

Qatar deports India expat who said nurses were being hired as 'sex slaves'

18 May 2022; MEMO: An Indian expat has been fired from his job in Qatar and deported following comments he made, that nurses from his home state of Kerala were being sent to Gulf states to become "sex slaves for terrorists".

The man, identified as Sisupalan Durgadas, appeared in a video which surfaced online and made the remarks while taking part in a Hindu religious event in the southern Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram.

Turkey to manage 2022 FIFA World Cup security in Qatar

16 May 2022; MEMO: Turkey is preparing to manage security at November's 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu announced yesterday.

Soylu made the announcement during an online meeting with the chairman of Qatar's Security and Safety Operations Committee for the tournament, Abdulaziz Al-Ansari, Anadolu has reported.

Qatar awards major LNG field expansion project contract

29 April 2022; MEMO: The state-owned oil and gas company QatarEnergy yesterday awarded a major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the North Field East LNG expansion to a consortium of Spain's Tecnicas Reunidas and China's Wison Engineering, Anadolu reported.

QatarEnergy said in a statement that the consortium would work on the expansion of the sulphur handling, storage and loading facilities within Ras Laffan industrial city.

Qatar's military expenditure increased by 434%

27 April 2022; MEMO: Qatar's military spending last year was 434% higher than in 2010, the last time such data was released by the Gulf state.

Last year military spending amounted to $11.6 billion, with 4.8 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP) used on defence, making Qatar the fifth largest spender in the Middle East.

Airbus, Qatar Airways back in court as plane row heats up

26 April 2022; MEMO: A British judge will, on Tuesday, rule whether Airbus must keep building A321neo jetliners for estranged Qatar Airways in a decision with implications for future multi-billion-dollar jet deals, as their public bust-up returns to London's High Court, Reuters reports.

Airbus revoked the A321neo deal in January in retaliation for Qatar's refusal to stop taking A350s in a separate legal and safety dispute over damage to the surface of the larger jets.

Russia-Ukraine conflict: IMF chief warns on consequences of the conflict for poorer countries

DOHA (Qatar), April 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva fears that the current situation with the Russia/Ukraine conflict could lead to an explosive situation in many of the poor countries with inflated prices, less jobs and overwhelming debts and called for greater global cooperation.

Speaking at the Doha Forum in Qatar, Georgieva hinted that the current situation evoked the lead-up to the 2011 uprisings known as the Arab Spring, when skyrocketing bread prices fueled anti-government protests across the Middle East.
