India: Migrant worker found dead in quarantine centre

Berhampur (Odisha), May 8 (PTI) A 40-year-old migrant worker was on Friday found dead in a quarantine centre in Ganjam district where he was lodged after returning from Surat in Gujarat, a police official said.

The deceased was kept at the quarantine centre set up at Dhunkapada high school in Polasara block since Tuesday after he arrived from Surat in a train, Ganjam Superintendent of Police Brijesh Kumar Rai said.

India: Stranded due to lockdown, 3 truck drivers die in Odishas

Dhenkanal, May 8 (PTI) Three truck drivers died on Friday after they fell sick in Odishas Dhenkanal district where they were stranded due to the COVID-19 triggered lockdown, police said.

The three had fallen sick in front of a sugar factory at Haripur on the outskirt of Dhenkanal town. They were found unconscious by some other truck drivers who arranged to rush the trio to the hospital, they said.

While one of them died on the spot, another died at Dhenkanal district headquarters hospital, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Dhenkanal, Sriharsa Mishra said.

India: Justice Rafiq takes oath as CJ of Orissa High Court

Bhubaneswar, April 27 (PTI) Justice Mohammad Rafiq was on Monday sworn in as the 31st Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.

Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal administered the oath of office and secrecy to him at Lok Seva Bhawan here, in the presence of Chief Secretary Asit Kumar Tripathy, Law Minister Pratap Jena, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Pradipta Kumar Naik and senior officials of the high court among others.

Official sources said social distancing guidelines laid down by the government were strictly adhered to during the brief ceremony.

India: Odisha police seals 57 roads to West Bengal

Bhubaneswar, Apr 22 (PTI) With four more persons having travel history to Kolkata testing positive for COVID-19 in the state, Odisha Police on Wednesday sealed roads along the West Bengal border.

The roads were sealed and additional force deployment was made a day after DGP Abhaya visited the border check gates.

India: Holy flag atop Puri's Jagannath temple catches fire

Puri, Mar 20 (PTI) A holy flag atop the Jagannath temple in Odisha's Puri caught fire when a grand lamp was being placed near it, officials said on Friday.

The incident took place when the 'Mahadeepa' or the lamp was being placed atop the 12th-century shrine by the servitors on Thursday night on the occasion of 'Papanashini Ekadashi', temple officials said.

India: Eight Naxal terrorists killed in Odisha in 2019

Bhubaneswar, Mar 12 (PTI) At least eight Maoists were killed, 50 arrested and 13 surrendered during 2019 across Odisha, according to a Home department standing committee report.

It said that 44 left wing extremism incidents were reported during last year of which 12 incidents were exchange of fire between the security personnel and the Maoists.

The RBI has capped withdrawals from Yes Bank at Rs 50,000 for the next one month and imposed strict limits on operations after the cash-starved lender faced "regular outflow of liquidity" following an effort to raise new capital failed.

India: 5-year-old girl raped by family acquaintance in Odisha

Kendrapara (Odisha), Feb 28 (PTI) A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man known to her family in Kendrapara district, police said on Friday.

The suspect has been detained for allegedly committing the crime on Thursday night, Inspector of Pattamundai police station Rakesh Tripathy said.

India: Army doc gets life for chopping wife into 300 pieces

Bhubaneswar, Feb 25 (PTI) A court gave life imprisonment on Tuesday to a 78-year-old retired Army doctor for murdering his wife and chopping the body into 300 pieces in Bhubaneswar in 2013.

Khurda District and Sessions Court judge Loknath Mohapatra sentenced Somanath Parida after convicting him for the murder, government pleader R R Barhma said.

India: Man sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping Odisha girl

Balasore (Odisha), Feb 17 (PTI) A man in Odisha's Balasore district was sentenced to 20 years in jail on Monday for raping a 14-year-old girl in 2017.

Special POCSO court and additional sessions judge Girija Prasad Mohapatra convicted Augusta Singh in the rape case and sentenced him to 20 years' rigorous imprisonment, besides slapping a fine of Rs 30,000. In case of a default, he has to undergo another 13 months in jail.
