India: Odisha has begun process to update NPR: Official

Bhubaneswar, Jan 7 (PTI) Amid a countrywide brouhaha over the implementation of the amended citizenship law, the Odisha government has initiated the process to update the National Population Register (NPR), with the launch of a pilot survey, an official said.

A door-to-door survey would be conducted soon as part of the process, he said.

India: IAS officer Bijay Ketan Upadhaya arrested for accepting Rs 1 lakh bribe

Bhubaneswar, Dec 30 (PTI) Anti-corruption vigilance sleuths on Monday arrested a senior IAS officer after he was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh, official sources said here.

The arrested bureaucrat was identified as Bijay Ketan Upadhaya, a 2009 batch IAS officer and working as the director of the Horticulture department here.

India: Odisha government launches e-certificate project

Bhubaneswar, Dec 29 (PTI) The Odisha government has launched a unique "people-friendly" project to provide official documents such as income, residence and similar other certificates online without any fees.

Without visiting government offices, people can now apply for these certificates online under the e-certificate project launched by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for the Revenue and Disaster Management department on Saturday as part of the 5T model of governance.

India: BJP will not backtrack on implementing NRC

Sambalpur (Odisha), Dec 25 (PTI) BJP National Secretary Suresh Pujari Wednesday said the party will not backtrack on implementing the national register of citizens (NRC) as it is essential for the security and self respect of the country.

NRC, he said, is in the interests of the country.

Pujari, who is the MP of neighbouring Bargarh, told a press conference here that intruders are availing of all the government benefits and the political parties are using them as vote banks.

India: Death penalty for rape and murder of 3-year-old girl

Keonjhar, Dec 19 (PTI) A court in Odishas Keonjhar district on Thursday sentenced a man to death penalty for rape and murder of a three-year-old girl.

Additional District Court-cum Special Court Judge Lokanath Sahu pronounced capital punishment to 20-year-old Sunil Kumar Naik after convicting him for rape and murder of the minor girl on January 13, 2017.

India: Pinaka missile system successfully flight-tested

Balasore (Odisha), Dec 19 (PTI) India's indigenously developed Pinaka missile system, which is capable of striking up to a range of 75 kilometres with high precision, was successfully flight-tested on Thursday, a defence statement said.

The Pinaka MK-II rocket is modified as a missile by integrating navigation, control and guidance system to improve the end accuracy and enhance the range, it said.

India: Abducted girl gang-raped, killed in Odisha

Nabarangpur (Odisha), Dec 14 (PTI) A 16-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped, gang-raped and subsequently killed in Odisha's Nabarangpur district, police said on Saturday.

The incident happened at Gumandli village within Bamini gram panchayat area of the district on Friday night, the police said.

Locals found the minor's body in a paddy field at the village on Saturday morning.

India: Man arrested for raping woman in Odisha

Jajpur (Odisha), Dec 10 (PTI) Police on Tuesday arrested a person for allegedly raping a 44-year-old woman in Odisha's Jajpur district.

The incident took place at Khandara Gedisahi village on Saturday night and the accused was arrested from a neighbouring area, they said.

As per the complaint filed by the woman at Jajpur Town police station, the accused took advantage of the fact that she stays alone in her house after demise of her husband.

India: Woman offered lift, gang raped in Odisha

Sambalpur (Odisha), Dec 9 (PTI) A 37-year-old woman was allegedly raped by four men after one of them offered her a lift in his motorbike in Odisha's Sambalpur town, the police said on Monday.

The four accused were arrested and the charge sheet in the case will be filed within 20 days, Sambalpur Superintendent of Police Kanwar Vishal Singh said.
