India: Rs 50 lakh seized from BJP men in poll-bound Pipili,

Puri, Apr 5 (PTI) Police on Monday seized currency notes of Rs 50 lakh from two persons at Pipili in Odisha where assembly by-poll is slated for April 17, police said.

The two men who were in a motorcyle were caught at Tarkaj Square when they tried to give the police the slip during a routine check and detained for interrogation.

Preliminary report said that the two men, who hail from Balanga area in Puri district, did not stop at the frisking point. They were chased by the police and intercepted at Tarakaj Square.

India: Odisha govt blames Centre for hike in edible oil price

Bhubaneswar, Mar 30 (PTI) With the edible oil price increasing about 60 per cent in a span of only six months, Odisha government Tuesday accused the Centre of imposing excess taxes leading to the price hike.

The issue was discussed in the assembly when the opposition Congress blamed both the state and the Central government for putting common man in trouble by raising the price of edible oil when people are battling the economic impact of the pandemic.

India: BJP leader critically injured in bomb attack in Odisha

Jajpur (Odisha), Mar 28 (PTI) A Right to Information (RTI) activist, who is also a local BJP leader, suffered serious injuries after miscreants hurled bombs at him in Odisha's Jajpur district, police said on Sunday.

Sarbeswar Behuria was admitted to Dharmasala CHC for treatment after the attack on Saturday night near Imam Nagar, but later shifted to SCB College and Hospital in Cuttack as his condition deteriorated, they said.

Behuria was returning home along with an associate in a car when two men intercepted the vehicle, lobbed bombs and fled.

India: DRDO conducts successful flight test of SFDR technology

Balasore (Odisha) Mar 5 (PTI) The Defence Research and Development Organisation on Friday successfully conducted a flight test of Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) technology in Odisha, official sources said.

The test was carried out at around 10.30 am from the integrated test range (ITR) launch platform at Chandipur, they said.

The successful demonstration of the SFDR technology will enable DRDO to develop long-range air to air missiles, the sources said.

India: BSF recovers 3 explosive devices from Naxal-hit area in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Feb 23 (PTI) BSF troops recovered three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and some other explosive material during an anti-Naxal operation in Odisha, officials said on Tuesday.

They said the IEDs, weighing one kg each, seven gelatin sticks and over a dozen battery sets apart from some other items were recovered by the personnel of the 9th battalion of the Border Security Force on Monday near the Gopinathguda-Kadalibandha village axis in Malkangiri district.

Odisha CM transfers Rs 1,272 cr to farmers' accounts

Bhubaneswar, Feb 12 (PTI) Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday transferred Rs 1,272 crore to the bank accounts of more than 53 lakh farmers in the state, under his governments Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA) scheme.

The chief minister, after talking to several farmers and enquiring about their activities over a video conference, said various schemes have been floated by his government to strengthen the infrastructure necessary for selling agricultural produce.

India: Odisha man sentenced to 20 years in jail in rape case

Cuttack, Dec 17 (PTI) A 25-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in jail on Thursday by a special court in Odisha's Cuttack that convicted him of raping a girl.

The special POCSO court also fined Rama Munda alias Rama Laguri Rs 10,000, besides directing a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the survivor's family.

Judge Bandana Kar found Laguri guilty under IPC Section 376 (2) (i) that deals with rape, and Section 6 of The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

India: Cong MLA sends legal notice to Sambit Patra

Cuttack, Dec 7 (PTI) A Congress MLA of Odisha on Monday served a legal notice to BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra and threatened criminal defamation against him if he does not immediately apologise publicly for allegedly tarnishing the legislator's image.

The Barabati-Cuttack Congress MLA Md Moquim sent the legal notice through Supreme Court advocate Shashwat Singh.

India: Two sentenced to life for human sacrifice in Odisha

Kendrapara (Odisha), Nov 12 (PTI) A court in Odisha's Kendrapara district on Thursday sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for killing an eight-year-old boy as part of an occult ritual five years ago.

District and sessions judge Basudeb Panda awarded life term to Abhinash Choudhury, an ex-serviceman, and his accomplice Bairagi Das.

India: Odisha governor, wife test positive for COVID-19

Bhubaneswar, Nov 2 (PTI) Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal and his wife have tested positive for COVID-19, Raj Bhavan sources said Monday.

Apart from the two, five more members of his family have been diagnosed with the infection, they said.

Taking to Twitter the Raj Bhavan authority said, "Hon'ble Governor and first lady have tested corona positive and have advised all who have come in close contact recently to get themselves tested."
