Kuwait's court nullifies 2022 election results, reinstates previous parliament

KUWAIT, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait's Constitutional Court on Sunday annulled the 2022 National Assembly and brought back the 2020 parliament, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported.

The ruling, which took immediate effect, saw members of the previous parliament, including Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanem, resumed office.

The decision came after the constitutional court ruled that the election process in September 2021 in all the five electoral districts was null and void.

Iran and Kuwait discuss maritime borders 'based on international law'

A meeting of the countries' joint legal committee was held in Tehran on Monday evening.

Sheikh Ahmed Nawaf Al-Sabah reappointed Kuwait's prime minister

5 Mar 2023; MEMO: Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on Sunday issued a decree reappointing Sheikh Ahmed Nawaf Al-Sabah as prime minister.

The decree also assigned Sheikh Ahmed to nominate members of the new government, the state news agency KUNA reported.

Sheikh Ahmed had tendered his government's resignation in January amid a dispute with the Kuwaiti parliament.

Kuwait: Massive rally in solidarity with Palestinians

04 Feb 2023; MEMO: Kuwaiti activists, NGOs and political factions organised, on Friday, a massive rally in solidarity with Palestinian people, Quds Press reported.

The participants expressed their support for the Palestinians and their resistance against the Israeli Occupation. They also expressed their opposition to the normalisation of ties with the Zionist state.

During the rally, the participants chanted: "Palestine is a trust and normalisation is treason … Palestine is an Arab state."

Kuwait's foreign reserves increased 8% in 2022

31 Jan 2023; MEMO: Official Kuwaiti data revealed yesterday that the country's foreign reserves increased by eight per cent in 2022, amid improved oil revenues.

The Central Bank of Kuwait's monthly report indicated that the Gulf state's reserves rose to 14.779 billion dinars ($48.5 billion) at the end of December 2022, from 13.68 billion dinars ($44.9 billion) at the end of the corresponding month of 2021.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait demand European action on Quran burning

On Friday, Swedish-Danish politician Rasmus Paludan, the leader of the far-right Stram Kurs (Hard Line) Party, burned a copy of the Quran in front of a mosque in Denmark.

Kuwait: 41 MPs call to boycott Sweden over extremist's burning of Holy Qur'an

24 Jan 2023; MEMO: As many as 41 Kuwaiti lawmakers condemned, on Tuesday, the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran by Swedish-Danish right-wing extremist Stram Kurs Party leader, Rasmus Paludan, in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, and called to boycott all countries that do not respect Muslims sanctities, Kuwaiti Al-Anbaa newspaper reported.

The lawmakers said, in a joint statement, that these practices provoke the feelings of Muslims around the world.

Kuwait investigates local bank's dealing with Israeli company

25 Dec 2022; MEMO: Kuwait said on Sunday that it has launched an investigation into suspicions of contracting with an Israeli company by a local bank, Anadolu reports.

In a statement, Finance Minister Abdulwahab Al-Rushaid said his ministry has formed a committee to investigate allegations that the Credit Bank has contracted with an Israeli company.

He said the bank had received a notice from the Audit Bureau that it was using a protection system for a company based in Tel Aviv.

Kuwait: death sentence for man who killed woman who refused his advances

20 Dec 2022; MEMO: A Kuwaiti court last week handed a death sentence to a man convicted of kidnapping and killing a lady who refused his marriage proposal.

The case of the murder of Farah Akbar was reopened last month after the Public Prosecutor's Office appealed against a life sentence handed to the defendant. It said there were clear signs that the murder was premeditated and so the death sentence was sought.
