WHO ramps up response in Eastern Africa amid looming health crisis

NAIROBI, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) said Thursday it's intensifying its operations to the looming health crisis in eastern Africa amid acute food insecurity.

Ibrahima Soce Fall, WHO Assistant Director-General for Emergency Response said the health risks in the region are increasing while access to healthcare is deteriorating.

Ethiopia names negotiators for looming Tigray peace process

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Ethiopian authorities have named a team of seven negotiators for possible peace talks with Tigray forces.

The announcement comes after Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced earlier in June the formation of a committee to handle negotiations with Tigray’s ruling party, which the government declared a terrorist group last year.

“The ruling Prosperity Party has laid out plans to settle the war in northern Ethiopia peacefully,” Justice Minister Gedion Timothewos told state media late Monday.

‘Total bloodbath’: Witnesses describe Ethiopia ethnic attack

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The heavily armed men appeared around the small farming village in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, frightening residents already on edge after recent clashes between government troops and rebels.

“The militants assured us that they will not touch us. They said they are not after us,” resident Nur Hussein Abdi told The Associated Press. “But in reality, they were surrounding our whole village for a deadly massacre. What happened the next day was a total bloodbath.”

Kenya, Zambia resolve to remove barriers to spur trade

NAIROBI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Kenya and Zambia have resolved to jointly remove barriers that hinder trade and investment between the two countries.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Zambian counterpart, Hakainde Hichilema, who met in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya on Wednesday, vowed to eradicate obstacles to trade and investment between the two countries.

Kenya's tea production hurt by erratic weather

NAIROBI, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's tea production in the first three months to March dropped, hurt by adverse weather conditions, the Tea Directorate said Tuesday.

The agency noted that adverse weather conditions that include depressed and irregular rains, as well as lengthy sunny and dry conditions in many growing areas cut production by more than 5 million kg in the first quarter of this year.

Study: Facebook fails to catch East Africa extremist content

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A new study has found that Facebook has failed to catch Islamic State group and al-Shabab extremist content in posts aimed at East Africa as the region remains under threat from violent attacks and Kenya prepares to vote in a closely contested national election.

An Associated Press series last year, drawing on leaked documents shared by a Facebook whistleblower, showed how the platform repeatedly failed to act on sensitive content including hate speech in many places around the world.

Kenya vows to intensify efforts to tackle transnational crime, graft

MOMBASA, Kenya, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday vowed to intensify measures against transnational crime and corruption which he said cannot be tackled without cross-institutional and cross-border cooperation.

Kenyatta called for a multi-agency approach, saying transnational organized crime networks exploit legitimate public institutions.

Kenya imposes night curfew in northern region amid insecurity

NAIROBI, May 2 (Xinhua) -- The Kenyan government Monday declared a month-long night curfew and security operations in Marsabit County in northern part of the country to enhance security disarmament exercise over rising insecurity.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i also said Komu Sub County in neighboring Isiolo County and Sololo area near the Kenya-Ethiopia border will also be affected by the dusk to dawn curfew.

Kenya: Commonwealth education ministers vow to increase investment in education
