India: Naxals release abducted CoBRA commando in Chhattisgarh

Bijapur, Apr 8 (PTI) CoBRA commando Rakeshwar Singh Manhas, who was abducted by Naxals after the last week's fierce gun-battle in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, was released on Thursday, police said.

Manhas, who belonged to the 210th battalion of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), an elite unit of the CRPF, had gone missing after the gunfight on Saturday and later reported to be in the captivity of the Naxals.

India: Mahmudpur village in Mathura renamed to Parasauli

Mathura, Apr 8 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has renamed Mathura's Mahmudpur village as Parasauli, an official said on Thursday.

Confirming it, District Magistrate Navneet Singh Chahal said a gazette notification has been issued, renaming the village in Goverdhan tehsil.

The village is associated with Bhakti saint Surdas, who had spent over seven decades here, an office-bearer of Surdas Braj Ras Sthali Vikas Samiti said here, adding that they have been demanding a change in the name since 1982.

India: Sunni Waqf Board to challenge Varanasi court order

Lucknow, Apr 8 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board said on Thursday that it would challenge in the high court the Varanasi court order on the disputed premises claimed both by the Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Gyanwapi mosque.

The order, given by a senior division civil court, asked the state government to get the disputed premises examined by a five-member team of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) at its expense.

India: Tourists coming to Kashmir by road will undergo corona tests

Srinagar, Apr 8 (PTI) All travellers coming to Kashmir by road shall undergo coronavirus tests in Kulgam district, an official said on Thursday.

Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Aijaz Asad chaired a meeting to review the coronavirus situation, a spokesperson said.

Asad said the testing for travellers coming by road shall be started in Lower Munda area in a couple of days as this would help in containing the spread of virus in the Valley.

India: Ten states show steep rise in COVID-19 daily cases

New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI) Ten states -- Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan have shown a steep rise in daily COVID-19 cases accounting for 83.29 per cent of the new infections, the Union Health Ministry said.

India's daily cases continue to rise, the ministry underlined.

A total of 1,31,968 new cases were registered a day, the highest single-day rise recorded so far in the country.

India records 131,968 Covid cases in a day, highest record

New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI) India registered a record single-day spike of 131,968 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, pushing its infection tally to 13,060,542, while the death toll increased to 167,642 with 780 more fatalities in a day, highest since October 18, the Union Health Ministry data showed.

Registering a steady increase for the 30th day in a row, the number of active COVID-19 cases increased to 979,608, which is 7.5 per cent of the total infections, according to the data updated at 8 am.

India: FCI should purchase wheat at MSP in Delhi : Gopal Rai

New Delhi, Apr 7 (PTI) Delhi Agriculture Minister Gopal Rai on Wednesday demanded that the Centre direct the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to set up counters in Narela and Najafgarh markets and start procuring wheat from farmers at minimum support price.

Rai said his department had written two letters, requesting FCI to set up counters in Narela and Najafgarh grain markets.

"The FCI replied counters have been set up and procurement started on April 1. However, these claims are false," the minister told reporters.

India: TMC hits out at EC over notice to Mamata

Kolkata, Apr 7 (PTI) The Trinamool Congress on Wednesday hit out at the Election Commission over its notice to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, seeking to know what action the poll panel has taken on the complaints filed against the BJP.

TMC spokesperson Mahua Moitra said the EC should "at least keep up the farce of impartiality".

Kolkata, Apr 7 (PTI) Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday attacked the BJP claiming that the party is out to change the history of several places to suit its agenda and will impose a totalitarian regime that will dictate what people should eat and how they should dress.
