Global shares rise after ‘relief rally’ on Wall Street

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares rose Tuesday, with European markets tracking gains in Asia and U.S. after some weak economic data raised hopes that the Federal Reserve might ease away from aggressive interest rate hikes.

France’s CAC 40 gained 2.8% in early trading to 5,955.79. Germany’s DAX rose 2.3% to 12,484.83. Britain’s FTSE 100 added 1.5% to 7,013.73. The future for the Dow industrials was up 1.3% at 29,913.00. The S&P 500 future contract rose 1.5% to 3,745.25.

Indonesia police: Stadium exit gates too small for escape

MALANG, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian police said Tuesday that the gates at the soccer stadium where police fired tear gas and set off a deadly crush were too small and could only accommodate two at a time when hundreds were trying to escape.

Photos from the Malang stadium where 125 people died and hundreds were injured on Saturday night in one of the sporting events worst disasters showed four connecting doors forming one gate.

Police said the investigation was focused on six of the 14 gates where most of the spectators died in the crush.

North Korea sends missile soaring over Japan in escalation

Seoul, Oct 4 (AP) North Korea on Tuesday fired a ballistic missile over Japan for the first time in five years, forcing Japan to issue evacuation notices and suspend trains during the flight of the nuclear-capable weapon that could reach the US territory of Guam and beyond.

The launch was the most provocative weapons demonstration by North Korea this year as it ramps up missile tests in its push to build a full-fledged nuclear arsenal that viably threatens US allies and the American homeland and earns the country recognition as a nuclear state.

Japan seeking to normalize diplomatic ties with North Korea, PM says

Japan’s PM Vowed To Reboot Hard-Hit Tourism Industry, Mitigate Soaring Energy Costs

TOKYO, Oct 3 (NNN-NHK) – Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, in a policy speech, marking the start of an extraordinary parliamentary session today, vowed to reboot the nation’s hard-hit tourism industry, by targeting increased spending by visitors.

Kishida said, a new target of increasing foreign visitors’ total spending to more than five trillion yen (about 35 billion U.S. dollars) annually, would be set, with the government taking advantage of the Japanese yen’s sudden depreciation, which inflates the purchasing power of foreign guests.

Vietnam reports its first monkeypox case

HANOI, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's Ministry of Health said on Monday that a 35-year-old woman had been diagnosed with monkeypox, who became the first case of monkeypox detected in the Southeast Asian country.

A resident in southern Ho Chi Minh City, the patient fell ill on Sept. 18 while traveling in Dubai with symptoms of fever, fatigue, chills, muscle aches, headache and a cough, as well as red and itchy bumps on her arms, body and face, before returning to Vietnam on Sept. 22, Vietnam News Agency cited the ministry as reporting.

Philippines, U.S. kick off joint military drills

MANILA, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Over 3,000 Philippine and U.S. troops on Monday kicked off a series of joint military drills to sharpen their "interoperability in conducting combined tactical readiness."

Acting Philippine Navy chief Rear Admiral Bernard Valencia said 630 Philippine troops, mainly from the marines, and 2,550 U.S. marine soldiers are participating in the 12-day annual exercises, dubbed KAMANDAG 6. Japanese and South Korean troops are taking part as observers, he added.

Indonesian recalls stinging tear gas in deadly soccer melee

MALANG, Indonesia (AP) — Dicky Kurniawan felt the sharp sting in his eyes as Indonesian police fired tear gas into the football stadium.

From his seat near an exit, he said he watched the melee unfold Saturday night as angry fans poured into the field to demand answers after host Arema FC of East Java’s Malang city lost to Persebaya Surabaya, its first defeat ever on its home turf. The mob threw bottles and other objects, and the violence spread outside the stadium, where police cars were overturned and torched.

Heavy rain swells rivers, causing floods in much of Thailand

BANGKOK (AP) — Heavy rain in northern, northeastern and central Thailand worsened severe flooding in many parts of the country on Monday, as authorities ordered the release of water into already overflowing rivers from dams that were filled to capacity.

Many areas were already flooded from seasonal monsoon rains when the remnants of Tropical Storm Noru, which earlier tore through the Philippines and Vietnam, swept through parts of the country last week.

Defense ministers of Japan, Australia and US condemn China's August drills near Taiwan

TOKYO, October 2. /TASS/: Japanese Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles during talks held October 1 in Hawaii condemned China's actions during the August drills near Taiwan, in which ballistic missiles launched fell within the Japanese exclusive economic zone, the Japanese Defense Ministry said in a statement released on Sunday on its website.
