Korean Air Plane Overshot Runway, Airport Closed In Central Philippines

MANILA, Oct 24 (NNN-PNA) – A Korean Air plane, carrying 173 passengers and crew members, overshot the runway, in the Philippines’ Cebu province late last night, forcing authorities to close the airport indefinitely.

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), said in a statement early today that, the Airbus A330 from Seoul, South Korea, landed at 11:11 p.m. local time (1511 GMT) last night and overshot the runway, in a landing attempt during heavy rains, when the accident occurred.

Vietnam’s Year-End Export Growth Forecast To Slow Down

HANOI, Oct 24 (NNN-VNA) – Vietnam’s import and export activities will face many challenges in the last months of this year and into the next, according to the Import-Export Department, under the country’s Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The difficulties are posed by factors, including the risk of recession in major economies, triggered by goods supply disruptions, and high input material prices, local newspaper, Vietnam News, cited Nguyen Cam Trang, deputy director of the department, as reporting.

13 killed, some injured as passenger ship catches fire in central Indonesia

JAKARTA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers recovered 13 bodies and rescued 263 people as a fire broke out on a passenger ship in the waters off East Nusa Tenggara province in central Indonesia on Monday, rescuers said.

Among the survivors, some suffered from injuries, said Saidar Rahmanjaya, head of the operation unit of the provincial search and rescue office.

"The total death toll stood at 13 now," he told Xinhua over phone.

He said that the search and rescue operation was halted now and it would resume on Tuesday.

Japan Cabinet minister resigns over Unification Church ties

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s economy minister said he submitted his resignation on Monday over ties to the Unification Church after facing mounting criticism in a widening controversy involving dozens of governing party lawmakers.

Daishiro Yamagiwa’s resignation is a further blow to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s government, which has been rocked by his party’s close ties to the controversial South Korean-based church following the assassination of former leader Shinzo Abe in July.

Brunei Ranks Second Lowest Disaster Risk Country In ASEAN: Report

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Oct 23 (NNN-XINHUA) – Brunei is categorised as the second lowest disaster risk country in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in the World Risk Index 2022 report, a local newspaper said, yesterday.

According to the paper, World Risk Index 2022, covers risks from earthquakes, floods, hurricanes/typhoons, (both coastal and riverine), drought, sea-level rise, tsunamis, and conflict.

The report ranked Brunei 165th out of 193 nations and regions with a score of 1.34 out of 100.

Cambodian officials, conservationists call for end to wildlife consumption

MONDULKIRI, Cambodia, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Officials and conservationists in Cambodia on Saturday called for an end to wildlife consumption, saying that the wildlife consumption demand was a major driver for poaching, snaring crisis and illegal trade.

Ministry of Environment's Secretary of State Neth Pheaktra said wildlife consumption also increased the risk of disease transmission from wild animals to humans, posing a grave threat to the environment and human health.

China’s Xi expands powers, promotes allies

BEIJING (AP) — President Xi Jinping, China’s most powerful leader in decades, increased his dominance Sunday when he was named to another term as head of the ruling Communist Party in a break with tradition and promoted allies who support his vision of tighter control over society and the struggling economy.

Xi, who took power in 2012, was awarded a third five-year term as general secretary, discarding a custom under which his predecessor left after 10 years. The 69-year-old leader is expected by some to try to stay in power for life.
