300 Pakistanis presumed dead in shipwreck off Greek

20 June 2023; MEMO: Pakistan observed a day of mourning for more than 300 Pakistanis presumed dead after an overcrowded fishing vessel carrying refugees sank off the coast of Greece.

At least 78 bodies have been recovered and hundreds more are feared drowned after the boat capsized in what was the worst and deadliest disaster of the year.

Five Polio Cases Detected In Afghanistan: UNICEF

JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Jun 20 (NNN-ANA) – Afghanistan has reported five polio cases, after a child under five years old was diagnosed with the crippling disease, in the country’s eastern Nangarhar province, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Afghanistan, said.

The case has been registered in Dur Baba district of Nangarhar province, Kamal Shah Sayed, head of the communications department of UNICEF Polio Eradication Programme in Afghanistan, told media.

Afghan Police Destroyed 80 Acres Of Poppy Farms In Jawzjan Province

SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan, Jun 20 (NNN-ANA) – Afghan police have destroyed around 80 acres of poppy farms and hashish, in Afghanistan’s northern Jawzjan province, over the past two months, an official said, today.

“Over the past two months, during a series of operations, we have destroyed 80 acres of poppy farms and hashish, in seven districts of Jawzjan province, including six acres of hashish farms,” provincial director of counter-narcotics, Mohammad Yunus Akhundzada, said.

Himalayan glaciers could lose 80% of their volume if global warming isn’t controlled, study finds

BENGALURU, India (AP) — Glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates across the Hindu Kush Himalayan mountain ranges and could lose up to 80% of their volume this century if greenhouse gas emissions aren’t sharply reduced, according to a report.

The report Tuesday from Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development warned that flash floods and avalanches would grow more likely in coming years, and that the availability of fresh water would be affected for nearly 2 billion people who live downstream of 12 rivers that originate in the mountains.

4 dead, 70 injured in bus accident in south India

NEW DELHI, June 19 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed and around 70 others injured after two buses collided head-on in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, confirmed a local cop over phone on Monday.

The mishap occurred in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district. The two private buses were moving between Cuddalore and Panruti areas when the front tyre of one of the buses burst. As a result, the bus went out of control and collided with another bus coming on the opposite direction.

Twin traffic accidents kill 3, injure 2 in N. Afghanistan

TALUQAN, Afghanistan, June 19 (Xinhua) -- At least three commuters were killed and two others injured in two different road crashes in Afghanistan's northern Takhar province, traffic police official Mohammad Nadir said Monday.

In the first accident, a car overturned due to reckless driving in Cha Ab district of Takhar province on Sunday evening, leaving two dead on the spot and two others injured, while minutes later a car collided with another vehicle coming from the opposite direction in the same area, killing one on the spot, the official added.

Bangladesh Hit By Longest Heatwave In Decades Accompanied By Electricity Crisis

DHAKA, Jun 18 (NNN-XINHUA) – Accompanied by high humidity levels, energy-starved Bangladesh has been experiencing brutal heatwaves since the country’s independence in 1971.

Officials at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said, heatwaves swept for 24 days in Apr and 22 days in May this year.

Also, they said, both Apr and May witnessed very low rainfall this year, compared to the average rainfall during the same period over the last 30 years.
