India: Hardik Patel quits Congress, writes scathing letter to Sonia Gandhi

Ahmedabad, May 18 (PTI) Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel on Wednesday resigned as the Gujarat Congress working president and from the party's primary membership.

Before quitting, Patel (28), who had joined the Congress in 2019, wrote a scathing letter to party chief Sonia Gandhi, claiming the Congress "only played to the role of a roadblock" over certain key issues in the country and was "merely reduced to opposing everything".

India: No tax on USD 6.38 bn transaction with Adani Group

New Delhi, May 17 (PTI) Swiss building material major Holcim has said its USD 6.38 billion deal with Asia's richest man Gautam Adani's group is tax-free.

Holcim had on Sunday signed a binding agreement with the Adani Group to sell its business in India -- about a 63 per cent stake in Ambuja Cement, which owns a 54.53 stake in ACC (of which 4.48 per cent is direct shareholding).

India: Hyundai ties up with Tata Power to set up EV charging infra

New Delhi, May 17 (PTI) Hyundai Motor India on Tuesday said it has joined hands with Tata Power to set up fast charging electric vehicle infrastructure across its select dealerships in the country.

Under the collaboration, 60 kW DC charging stations will be installed at the company's 34 EV dealerships in 29 cities to cater to all kinds of electric vehicles through Hyundai and Tata Power EZ Charge Mobile App.

India: Man arrested for raping minor in UP's Balrampur

Balrampur (UP) May 17 (PTI) A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her brother-in-law in the Utraula Kotwali area here, police said on Tuesday.

The accused had come to his in-laws' house on Sunday. He was in a room with his wife when the minor girl came to call her elder sister, Utraula Kotwali police station in-charge inspector Anil Singh said.

As soon as his wife left the room, the man raped the minor girl, he said quoting a complaint filed by the victim's mother.

India: UP govt opposes bail plea of SP leader Azam Khan in SC

New Delhi, May 17 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday opposed the bail plea of jailed Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, and termed him as a "land grabber" and a "habitual offender".

Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, told a bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao that he has allegedly threatened the investigating officer in the land grabbing case.

India: CBI books Karti Chidambaram for facilitating visa of Chinese nationals for illegal gratification

New Delhi, May 17 (PTI) The CBI has filed a fresh case against Lok Sabha MP Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, for allegedly facilitating visas of 250 Chinese nationals after receiving illegal gratification of Rs 50 lakh, officials said on Tuesday.

The CBI on Tuesday morning started coordinated search operations at nine locations in multiple cities in the country, including Karti Chidambaram's residences in Chennai and Delhi, they said.

India: SBI hikes lending rate, EMIs to go up

New Delhi, May 16 (PTI) The country's largest lender State Bank of India has raised its marginal cost of funds based lending rate by 10 basis points or 0.1 per cent across all tenures, a move that will lead to an increase in EMIs for borrowers.

This is the second hike in a month raising the cost by 0.2 per cent with the two consecutive increases.

US has made Pakistan a slave without invading it: Imran Khan

Lahore, May 16 (PTI) The US has made Pakistan a slave without invading it, ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan claimed, asserting that the people will never accept an "imported government."

Khan, the 69-year-old cricketer-turned-politician, was voted out of power last month through a no-confidence motion, which he alleges was plotted by the US with the help of local players over his pursuance of an independent foreign policy.

India: Adani to acquire Holcim India assets for USD 10.5 bn

New Delhi, May 15 (PTI) Asia's richest man Gautam Adani's group on Sunday said it has clinched a deal to acquire a controlling stake in Holcim Ltd's businesses in India for USD 10.5 billion, marking the ports-to-energy conglomerate's entry into the cement sector.

The Adani Group will acquire 63.1 per cent of Ambuja Cements Ltd along with related assets. Ambuja's local subsidiaries include ACC Ltd, which is also publicly traded.
