India: Cars, bikes gutted in fire at mattress factory in Kanpur's Naubasta area

Kanpur: A massive fire broke out in a foam mattress manufacturing factory in Devki Nagar under the Naubasta police station area here on Wednesday.

Soon the fire took on a formidable form that caused chaos in the area. The people of the area tried to control the fire but were not successful.

As soon as the information reached, about eight fire tenders reached the spot. The fire was brought under control after hours of effort.

Sanu, a resident of Babupurwa, was reported to be the owner of the factory in Devki Nagar.

Gunmen kill 2 policemen, polio worker in northwest Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Gunmen on motorcycles opened fire on Pakistani police escorting a team of polio workers Tuesday during a door-to-door inoculation campaign in a former Pakistani Taliban stronghold, killing two policemen and a polio worker, police said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in North Waziristan, a district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attack came a day after the government launched another nationwide anti-polio campaign amid a spike in attacks.

Arrest of Indian Muslim journalist sparks widespread outrage

NEW DELHI (AP) — Police in New Delhi have arrested a Muslim journalist for allegedly hurting religious sentiment in what many slammed as the latest example of shrinking media freedom under Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

Mohammed Zubair, a co-founder of fact-checking website Alt News, was arrested Monday evening over a tweet that police said deliberately insulted “the god of a particular religion.” Senior police officer K.P.S. Malhotra said the case was brought following a complaint from a Twitter user and Zubair was remanded in custody for one day.

India: Editor's Guild condemns Zubair's arrest

New Delhi, Jun 28 (PTI) The Editors Guild of India on Tuesday termed as "extremely disturbing" the arrest of AltNews co-founder Muhammad Zubair on charges of hurting religious sentiments, and demanded his immediate release.

"It is apparent that AltNews' alert vigilance was resented by those who use disinformation as a tool to polarise society and rake nationalist sentiments," the Guild said in a statement here.

India: Female leopard with cubs terrorise villagers in Kanpur's Katri areas

Kanpur: A female leopard has extended its terror in a range of ten Kms in Kanpur rural areas for the past five days.

Owing to the fear villagers of numerous villages are reported to have been avoiding coming to their fields. They are so terrified that their movement closes after evening.

The forest department team is trying to find it by bursting firecrackers and playing canisters in the forests.Searches are also being made in bushes and mud tunnels.

ISLAMABAD, Jun 27 (APP): The Pakistan Afghanistan Cooperation Forum (PACF) is keeping up its efforts to assist the people of Afghanistan hit by the recent devastating earthquake hitting the eastern part of the country.

At least 1,000 people had died and around 3,000 sustained injuries while hundreds of houses were destroyed in the quake which affected the mountainous province of Paktika.

New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI) The Enforcement Director has summoned Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Tuesday for questioning in a money laundering probe linked to the re-development of a Mumbai 'chawl', officials said.

The Rajya Sabha MP has been asked to depose before the federal agency at its office in south Mumbai on June 28 and record his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said.
