Sri Lanka Reported Nearly 50,000 Dengue Cases This Year

COLOMBO, Aug 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Sri Lanka reported nearly 50,000 cases of dengue, in the first eight months of this year, according to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU).

Local media, quoting the NDCU yesterday said that, 49,941 people have been admitted to hospitals for dengue treatment, in the past eight months.

Half the cases were reported from the Western province, comprising Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts.

Chinese military ship leaves Sri Lanka after controversial visit

COLOMBO, Aug 22 (Reuters) - A Chinese military survey ship that docked at Sri Lanka's Chinese-built port of Hambantota despite opposition from neighbouring India left on Monday after a week-long stay, the port company told Reuters.

Analysts say the Yuan Wang 5 is among a group of Chinese ships that monitor satellite, rocket and intercontinental ballistic missile launches. India, Sri Lanka's northern neighbour, fears China could use the port as a military base.

Pakistan approves agreement draft to provide troops for World Cup security in Qatar -minister

ISLAMABAD, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Pakistan's cabinet has approved a draft agreement that allows the government to provide troops for security at the FIFA soccer World Cup in Qatar later this year, Pakistan's information minister said on Monday.

A summary outlining the agreement, to be signed between Doha and Islamabad, was approved by the cabinet, minister Marriyum Aurangzeb told Reuters, ahead of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to Qatar starting Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear when the agreement would be signed between the two countries.

Police file terrorism charges against Pakistan’s Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani police have filed terrorism charges against former Prime Minister Imran Khan, authorities said Monday, escalating political tensions in the country as the ousted premier holds mass rallies seeking to return to office.

The charges followed a speech Khan gave in Islamabad on Saturday in which he vowed to sue police officers and a female judge and alleged that a close aide had been tortured after his arrest.

India: 17-year-old rape victim found dead in canal in UP

Barabanki (UP), Aug 22 (PTI) The body of a 17-year-old rape victim was recovered from a canal here, police said on Monday.

Police said the body was seen floating in the Indira Canal near Kazipur Behta village located on the Sitapur border on Saturday.

Additional Superintendent of Police Punendra Singh said according to the post-mortem report, she died due to drowning.

During investigation, police found that the girl, a resident of the Sandana police area, had left her house on August 18 for a court hearing and did not return.

Kanpur Metro train develops snag at Geeta Nagar station

Kanpur: Metro operation began as usual at 6 in the morning. At around 7:30 a.m., the metro train stopped at Geeta Nagar station.

Despite attempts to start the engine again it was not starting to run again. Due to this, other trains coming from behind also had to stop at different stations.

There was a problem with the wiring inside the train, as was reportedly said.

Attempts were made to rectify the problem on the spot but the engineers could not fix it at the station.

Former Pakistan PM Khan accuses government of blocking YouTube to censor his speech

KARACHI, Pakistan, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan accused the government of temporarily blocking YouTube in the country on Sunday evening to prevent people from listening live to a speech he gave at a political rally.

The accusation came after Pakistan's electronic media regulator late on Saturday announced a ban on the live airing of Khan's speeches because of what it called his "hate speech" against state institutions.

"Imported govt blocked YouTube midway through my speech," Khan said on Twitter.
