China’s daily death toll from virus tops 100 for first time

BEIJING (AP) — China’s daily death toll from a new virus topped 100 for the first time and pushed the total past 1,000 dead, authorities said Tuesday after leader Xi Jinping visited a health center to rally public morale amid little sign the contagion is abating.

Though more offices and stores in China were reopening after the extended Lunar New Year break, many people appear to be staying home. Public health authorities are closely monitoring whether workers’ returning to cities and businesses resuming worsens the spread of the virus.

Japan says about 60 more virus cases found on cruise ship

BEIJING (AP) — Japan’s health ministry says about 60 more people on a quarantined cruise ship have tested positive for a new virus.

Health ministry officials said Monday they are double checking the results and could not immediately release the exact figure. They said further details are under way.

Health officials previously said 70 people had the virus among the 3,711 passengers and crew on the Diamond Princess, quarantined in the port of Yokohama, near Tokyo.

More than 3,600 people are still in a 14-day quarantine on board the ship.

Scientists race to develop vaccine for new coronavirus

The new virus has spread rapidly since emerging late last year in China, killing more than 800 people in the mainland and infecting over 37,000. Cases have been reported in two dozen other countries.

(AP) — A viral outbreak that began in China has infected more than 37,500 people globally.

The latest figures reported by global health authorities as of Sunday in Beijing:

— China: 811 deaths and 37,198 confirmed cases on the mainland. In addition, Hong Kong has had 25 cases, including one death. Macao has had 10 cases. Most of the deaths have been in central Hubei province, where illnesses from the new type of coronavirus were first detected in December.

— Japan: 96

— Singapore: 40

— Thailand: 32

— South Korea: 25

— Taiwan: 16

Death toll rises to 722 in China coronavirus; 86 died in single day

Beijing, Feb 8 (PTI) The death toll in China's novel coronavirus outbreak has sharply risen to 722 with 86 new mortalities in a single day, mostly in the worst-affected Hubei province, while the total number of confirmed cases jumped to 34,546, Chinese health officials said on Saturday.

Eighty-six deaths were reported in mainland China with 3,399 fresh cases from 31 provincial-level regions, the country's National Health Commission said.

China builds second hospital in Wuhan in two weeks

BEIJING, February 7. /TASS/: The second of two new hospitals in China’s Wuhan will be opened on Saturday, Wuhan’s Vice-Mayor Hu Yabo said during a press conference on Friday.

"The 1,600-bed Leishenshan hospital will be opened on February 8," he said. According to the official, Wuhan hospitals can receive 8,900 patients in total, with the Huoshenshan hospital, which opened last week, receiving an additional 1,000 patients.

Wuhan Combs Communities To Leave No Coronavirus Patient Unattended

WUHAN, Feb 8 (NNN-XINHUA) – Wuhan, the epicentre of the novel coronavirus outbreak, is combing communities to ensure every confirmed or suspected patient is located and attended to, as a senior official vowed to nail any official deserter “to history’s pillar of shame.”

A conference on epidemic control, ordered the mega city, with a population of over 10 million, to make all-out efforts to locate patients, confirmed or suspected, to be infected with the virus, close contacts of confirmed cases, as well as, patients with fever.

U.S. awaits China's approval to send in experts as part of WHO team

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - U.S. experts on infectious diseases, including government officials, are awaiting approval to enter China to help fight the coronavirus epidemic, having been included on a list proposed by the World Health Organization, a U.S. embassy spokesman told Reuters on Saturday.

China agreed to allow WHO to form a team of experts to travel to China to learn about the virus and find solutions to the outbreak, the spokesman said.

China’s Communist Party faces recriminations over virus

BEIJING (AP) — China’s ruling Communist Party faced public anger and recrimination Friday over the death of a doctor who was threatened by the authorities after trying to sound the alarm about the new coronavirus back in December. The death toll, meanwhile, rose to nearly 640, and the number of people infected worldwide climbed past 31,400.
