Protesters against German neo-Nazi rally gather in Kassel

21 July 2019; DW: Thousands of people have staged a counterprotest against a planned demonstration by a neo-Nazi party in Kassel. The rally comes several weeks after the killing of one of the city's prominent pro-migrant politicians.

Some 8,000 people took to the streets of Kassel to protest against a neo-Nazi rally in the western German city.

German churches lose 430,000 Catholic and Protestant members in 2018

20 July 2019; DW: Germany's Catholic Church lost 216,078 members and Protestant churches lost some 220,000 in 2018, according to data published on Friday by the German Bishops' Conference and the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).

In total, around 23 million German citizens are still members of the Catholic Church and 21.14 million are members of the Protestant churches. The two groups account for 53.2% of the country's total population of over 83 million.

Merkel urges Germans to stand up to right-wing extremists

BERLIN, July 14 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday that Germans must stand up to right-wing extremists and honor the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler 75 years ago.

On July 20, 1944, a bomb in a suitcase exploded in Hitler's office, but the Nazi leader survived the attack with only mild injuries. The plot's orchestrator, German army colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, and some 200 co-conspirators were executed.

Germany: Identitarian movement classified as right-wing extremist

12 July 2019; DW: Germany's domestic intelligence service has identified the country's Identitarian movement as an extremist entity. The group, which claims to defend European identity through ethnopluralist ideology, has gained traction.

Germany's domestic intelligence agency on Thursday said it would step up observation of the far-right Identitarian movement in Germany, after designating it an extremist body.

Final VW 'Beetle' model rolls off Mexican production line

11 July 2019; AFP: German auto giant Volkswagen launched the final edition of its iconic "Beetle" car from its Mexican factory in Puebla on Wednesday.

The bug-shaped metallic blue sedan rolled off the production line in central Mexico to rapturous applause, the last of a model first manufactured in the late 1930s.

The last 65 models of the "Beetle Final Edition" will be sold in Mexico on the internet for a base price of $21,000, and can be reserved with a $1,000 payment.
