Japan revises strategy to promote hydrogen use in push towards decarbonization

TOKYO, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The Japanese government on Tuesday approved a new strategy for the promotion of hydrogen, involving generating 15 trillion yen (107.76 billion U.S. dollars) of investment from both public and private sectors to accelerate its use in the country's push towards decarbonization.

Under the first revision in six years to the country's basic hydrogen strategy, it was also decided that the hydrogen supply would be increased sixfold.

This would significantly increase from the current 2 million tons to a supply of around 12 million tons by 2040.

El Salvador prosecutors said ex-president approved 1989 massacre of Jesuits

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — Prosecutors in El Salvador say they have evidence that former President Alfredo Cristiani was present at a meeting that approved the 1989 massacre of six Jesuit priests and two others by soldiers.

Prosecutors who announced the case against Cristiani last year presented formal charges against the former president at an arraignment hearing late Monday, saying the plot to kill the Jesuits during the country’s 1980-1992 civil war went all the way to the top.

Russia's Shoigu: Ukraine's counter-offensive has been thwarted

MOSCOW, June 6 (Reuters) - Russia's defence minister said on Tuesday his forces had thwarted the first three days of a Ukrainian counter-offensive, alleging that they had killed or wounded more than 3,700 Ukrainian soldiers.

Unusually, Sergei Shoigu read a statement himself rather than leaving it to the ministry's regular spokesman.

Ukraine has maintained deliberate ambiguity about whether its long-expected counter-offensive is under way, and Reuters could not independently verify the battlefield claims.

Egypt population growth records significant decline

06 June 2023; MEMO: Egypt's population growth has significantly declined, reaching 105 million on Saturday, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS).

Despite the significant decline, Egypt remains the most populous Arab country and the third in Africa after Nigeria and Ethiopia and 14th in the world.

Egyptian authorities have been working to reduce the population size in a bid to adjust to the government's development plans.

Israeli soldiers to join Moroccan war games for first time

RABAT, June 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Israeli soldiers will for the first time take part in military exercises in Morocco when the biggest war games event in Africa kicks off Tuesday, the Israeli army said.

“This is the first time that the IDF is taking an active part in the ‘African Lion’ international exercise,” said a statement from the Israeli army late Monday.

“A delegation of 12 soldiers and commanders from the Golani Reconnaissance Battalion” — an elite infantry unit — has been sent to participate alongside some 8,000 soldiers from 18 countries.

Israeli PM, Egyptian president discuss deadly border shootout over phone

During a phone call, Sisi offered his "deep condolences" over the deadly shooting at the Sinai desert border on Saturday, Netanyahu's office said in a statement.

Russian court sets date for new trial of jailed Kremlin foe Navalny

MOSCOW (AP) — A Moscow court on Tuesday set the date for a new trial of imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny that could keep him in prison for decades.

The Moscow City Court held a preliminary hearing behind closed doors to discuss technical issues related to the trial of the Kremlin’s arch foe before it begins on June 19.

Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, said that the trial will be held at a maximum security prison 250 kilometers (150 miles) east of Moscow where Navalny is serving a nine-year sentence for fraud and contempt of court.

Cuba willing to expand health relations with Türkiye

Russia: Death toll of cider poisoning in Ulyanovsk Region grows to 20

MOSCOW, June 6. /TASS/: The number of people who died from poisoning by a cider beverage in the Ulyanovsk Region has increased to 20, the regional Health Ministry reported Tuesday.

"Ulyanovsk Region medics do everything they can to save the lives and health of the people who suffered from poisoning. According to the most recent information, a total of 51 cases of poisoning by alcoholic beverages have been registered in the region so far. Unfortunately, 20 people could not have been saved," the report says.

Peru emerges as UAE’s largest trading partner in LatAm after signing of air services deal

LIMA, June 6 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peruvian Commission for Promotion of Export and Tourism (PromPeru) reported that Peru and United Arab Emirates have signed an air services agreement after 12 years of negotiations.

The deal was reached last Friday and, as result, Peru has become the second-most important trading partner of the UAE in Latin America.

This move has enabled two of the ten largest airlines in the world to extend their routes to Peru, thus facilitating tourism and strengthening economic-commercial relations.

USA: Lead, rodents, put tenants at risk, Rhode Island says in lawsuit against major landlord

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island landlord whose tenants have long complained about lead hazards, rodent infestations and other problems with their apartments was sued Tuesday by the state attorney general, who said conditions at many properties put renters’ health and safety at risk.

Pioneer Investments LLC, and its president, Anurag Sureka, have failed to comply with state rental, lead hazard, and consumer protection laws, Attorney General Peter Neronha said in the complaint filed in Providence County Superior Court.

Dried Lake In Northern Mongolia Restored After Several Decades

ULAN BATOR, Jun 6 (NNN-XINHUA) – A dried lake in the northern Mongolian province of Khuvsgul, has been restored by engineering solutions, after several decades, the country’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism said, today.

“The Khodon River, changing its course due to a heavy flood in 1971, negatively impacted the ecosystem of a group of lakes in Darkhad Valley. Especially, the Tsoitson lake, connected to the Khodon River, ultimately evaporated completely,” the ministry said in a statement.
