Afghanistan: Taliban halt Sweden activities in Afghanistan after Quran burning

11 July 2023; MEMO: The Taliban administration halted all activities by Sweden in Afghanistan on Tuesday in response to the burning of a Quran in Stockholm last month, and a major Swedish aid group said it was seeking clarification about the impact on its programmes, Reuters reports.

India: Water level rises, sluice gates at Ganga Barrage open in Kanpur

Kanpur: As many as 77,077 cusecs of water from Narora Dam and 1 lakh 35 thousand cusecs from Haridwar reached here. 

Owing to this release, the water level downstream of Ganga started rising rapidly. Therefore the water level of the Ganga rose by 41 cm.

Whereas a rise of 32 cm has been recorded in Shuklaganj of Unnao.

On the other hand, 45,364 cusecs of water were released from Kanpur to Prayagraj through all the 30  sluice gates of Kanpur Ganga Barrage.

All 30 gates of the Ganga barrage have been opened when the water level upstream crossed 113 metres.

Israel: Protesters storm Knesset ahead of vote on judicial overhaul package

11 July 2023; MEMO: Scores of Israeli protesters stormed the Knesset yesterday ahead of a vote on the judicial overhaul package, local media reported.

Members of the Knesset Guard forcibly removed the protesters who tried to block the entry of MKs to the Knesset plenum.

Scenes caught on camera showed the guards picking up and dragging several demonstrators sitting on the floor and moving them away from the plenum.

Ukraine commanders exchanged with Turkiye, Russia says it violated the deal

10 July 2023; MEMO: Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has returned home from a visit to Turkiye, with five commanders of Ukraine's former garrison in Mariupol, a move Russia said violated the terms of a prisoner exchange deal engineered last year, Reuters reports.

According to the report, Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said on Saturday that Ankara had promised under the exchange agreement to keep the men in Turkiye and complained that Moscow had not been informed of the move.

USA: A grand jury being seated Tuesday could decide whether Trump is charged over Georgia’s 2020 election

ATLANTA (AP) — A grand jury being seated Tuesday in Atlanta will likely consider whether criminal charges are appropriate for former President Donald Trump or his Republican allies for their efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss in Georgia.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has been investigating since shortly after Trump called Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in early 2021 and suggested the state’s top elections official could help him “find 11,780 votes,” just enough needed to beat Democrat Joe Biden.

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday hailed an agreement for Sweden to join NATO as more work remained to determine a path forward for Ukraine’s future with the alliance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized as “absurd” the absence of a timetable for his country’s entry.

Biden described the summit as a “historic moment” and said the United States agreed with a proposal, yet to be released publicly, to outline a path for Ukraine’s eventual membership.
