Canada: Nova Scotia wrestles with aftermath of devastating floods

July 23 (Reuters) - Canada's East Coast province of Nova Scotia began cleaning up on Sunday after torrential rainfall caused devastating floods, while the search continued for four people including two children who went missing during the deluge.

The storm, which started on Friday, in some places dumped more than 25 cm (10 inches) in just 24 hours - as much as normally falls in three months. CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon said it was the most rain to hit the provincial capital Halifax since Hurricane Beth in 1971.

Myanmar to unveil new, higher denomination banknotes on July 31

YANGON, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM) on Sunday announced that it will release new banknotes with a denomination of 20,000 kyats on July 31.

The release of the new banknotes is to mark the completion of the Maravijaya Buddha Image, a giant sitting marble statue of Lord Buddha in Nay Pyi Taw and to mark the first birthday celebration of a rare white elephant, the central bank said.

Indian rescuers recover 27 dead but no sign of dozens of missing villagers swamped by a landslide

NEW DELHI (AP) — Hundreds of rescuers ended a four-day search for scores of people still missing after heavy monsoon rains triggered a massive landslide in a village in western India, an official said Sunday.

The rescue teams recovered the bodies of 27 people killed in the Wednesday night landslide that hit the Raigadh district village of Irshalwadi, located nearly 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Mumbai, the Maharashtra state capital.

UK's EasyJet says it is operating flights as normal to Rhodes

LONDON, July 23 (Reuters) - Britain's easyJet (EZJ.L) said on Sunday it was operating flights as normal to Rhodes but was closely monitoring the wildfires on the Greek island.

"We advise customers travelling to and from Rhodes to check the status of their flights on Flight Tracker," it said in a statement.

It said it was working to comply with the requests of the local authorities and is in contact with its customers there.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, July 23 (Reuters) - The Treaty of Lausanne that formed modern Turkey is still cherished by some but remains a disappointment for others including Kurds and Armenians who hoped for autonomous regions and justice for Ottoman-era crimes.

Iraq renews deal to supply Lebanon up to 2m tons of crude for a year

21 July 2023; MEMO: Iraq renewed its agreement to provide Lebanon with up to 2 million tons of crude oil for a year, Lebanese Energy Ministry said in a statement on Friday, Reuters reports.

The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Iraq providing Lebanon with fuel oil and crude oil, the Iraqi state news agency, INA, also reported on Friday, without elaborating.

Sri Lanka has sufficient fuel: minister

COLOMBO, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka has sufficient quantities of fuel, the country's Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said on Sunday.

Talking to journalists here in the country's capital, Wijesekera said the country has 133,936 metric tons of diesel and 6,192 metric tons of super diesel as of Sunday morning.

Sri Lanka also has 35,402 metric tons of octane 92 and 5,367 metric tons of octane 95 petrol, as well as 30,173 metric tons of jet fuel in stock, the minister said.

Yemeni Authorities Arrested 12 Over Killing Of WFP Employee

ADEN, Jul 23 (NNN-SABA) – Yemeni security forces detained 12 suspects yesterday, in an operation to track down perpetrators who had shot dead an employee of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) a day earlier, a government official said.

Meanwhile, the security forces’ search operation was still underway to find those who masterminded the drive-by shooting attack, the official said.
