TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Rain continued to pelt northeastern China in the wake of Typhoon Doksuri Saturday, as authorities reported more fatalities and missing people while evacuating thousands more.

One person died and five went missing in the city of Shulan in Jilin province, which has seen five straight days of rainfall, according to state media.

Egypt: Suez Canal tugboat sinks after collision with tanker

CAIRO, Aug 5 (Reuters) - A Suez Canal tugboat has sunk after colliding with a Hong Kong-flagged LPG tanker in the strategically important waterway, the canal authority said on Saturday, without saying if shipping traffic had been disrupted.

The tanker, Chinagas Legend, is waiting in Port Said until the completion of procedures related to the accident, canal authority head Osama Rabie said in a statement.

Two canal sources said Chinagas Legend was unharmed by the collision, was functioning normally and had anchored at Port Said.

USA: Social media influencer faces multiple charges after giveaway sparks chaos in Manhattan

NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Kai Cenat, a popular livestreamer on the American online streaming platform Twitch, will face multiple charges after a giveaway event he hosted Friday in New York City's Manhattan erupted into chaos, said local police.

Cenat will be charged with multiple counts of inciting a riot, unlawful assembly and possibly other crimes, New York City Police Department chief Jeffrey Maddrey said at a Friday night news conference.

USA: Person in connection with dancer’s stabbing death at Brooklyn gas station is in custody, police say

NEW YORK (AP) — Police have a person in custody in connection with the death of O’Shae Sibley, a gay man who was fatally stabbed after a confrontation between a group of friends dancing to a Beyoncé song and several young men who taunted them, authorities said Friday.

The New York City Police Department declined to immediately identify the person or say what criminal charges they would face, if any, describing them only as a “person of interest.”

Iran boosts navy with missiles, drones as US offers guards for Gulf ships

DUBAI, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Iran has equipped its Revolutionary Guards' navy with drones and 1,000-km (600-mile) range missiles, Iranian news agencies reported on Saturday, as the U.S. offers to put guards on commercial ships going through the Gulf's Strait of Hormuz.

Referring to the possible presence of U.S. guards, Iranian armed forces spokesperson Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said the region's countries were "capable of ensuring Persian Gulf security" themselves.

Russia's Medvedev suggests Ukrainian ports will be hit again

MOSCOW, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Saturday suggested Moscow would launch more strikes against Ukrainian ports in response to Kyiv's attacks on Russian ships in the Black Sea, and threatened to hand Ukraine "an ecological catastrophe".

Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, a body chaired by President Vladimir Putin, spoke after Ukrainian sea drone attacks on a Russian warship in the port of Novorossiysk, and against a tanker near Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

US declines to invoke prisoner of war status for Travis King

WASHINGTON, Aug 4 (Reuters) - The United States has declined so far to classify Army Private Travis King as a prisoner of war, despite his being taken into North Korean custody after he crossed into the country last month, four U.S. officials told Reuters.

The decision, which could mean King is not covered by the protections entitled to prisoners of war under the Geneva Convention, is highly sensitive for the U.S. military given its commitment to leave no soldier behind enemy lines.

Tunisia rescues 15,000 migrants in first half of 2023

05 August 2023; MEMO: Tunisian Security Services have rescued 15,327 illegal migrants during the first half of 2023, Tunisian Interior Minister Kamal Feki announced on Friday.

According to Feki, 95 per cent of the migrants hold African or sub-Saharan identities.

He noted that the security services are carrying out a direct humanitarian follow-up in coordination with the relevant international organisations.

Egyptian FM to attend ministerial meeting of Sudan's neighboring countries in Chad

CAIRO, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will travel to Chad on Sunday for a meeting of Sudan's neighboring countries to seek peaceful solutions to the Sudanese crisis, the Foreign Ministry said Saturday.

The meeting in N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, is the first one of the ministerial mechanism formed at the summit of Sudan's neighboring countries held on July 13 in Egypt's capital Cairo, according to a ministry statement.

Two More Palestinians Killed In Clashes With Israeli Settlers, Soldiers In West Bank: Health Ministry

RAMALLAH, Aug 5 (NNN-WAFA) – Two more Palestinians were killed yesterday, during clashes with Israeli settlers and soldiers, in two separate incidents in the West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry said.

Qusai Ma’tan, 19, died after he was shot by Israeli settlers, during clashes in the village of Burqa, north-west of Nablus, while two other Palestinians were moderately injured, the ministry said.

Palestinian eyewitnesses said, clashes broke out in Burqa between dozens of Palestinians and Israeli settlers, who stormed the village.
