USA: Biden to reassure Lahaina residents they will control rebuilding

KIHEI, Hawaii, Aug 20 (Reuters) - U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Deanne Criswell said on Sunday that President Joe Biden will reassure the people of Lahaina that they will be in control of how they rebuild when he visits the razed Maui community on Monday.

The president along with the first lady plan to visit the historic Hawaiian town and meet with first responders, local officials and victims and get a firsthand look at the widespread devastation, Criswell said on CNN's "State Of The Union" show.

Mexico: Tropical Storm Hilary swirls northward packing deadly rainfall along Mexico’s Baja coast

ENSENADA, Mexico (AP) — Tropical Storm Hilary swirled northward Sunday just off the coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, no longer a hurricane but still carrying so much rain that forecasters said “catastrophic and life-threatening” flooding is likely across a broad region of the southwestern U.S.

As of 8 a.m. Pacific time, Hilary was located about 220 miles (350 kilometers) south-southeast of San Diego, the National Hurricane Center reported. Hilary had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph) and was moving northwest at 25 mph (41 kph).

US urges China to cease military pressure against Taiwan

WASHINGTON, Aug 19 (Reuters) - The U.S. urged China on Saturday to stop pressuring Taiwan, after Beijing launched military drills around the democratically governed island in response to Taiwan Vice President William Lai's U.S. visit.

"We urge Beijing to cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan and instead engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan," a State Department spokesperson told Reuters in a statement.

The U.S. would continue to monitor the exercises closely, the department statement said.

Hilary makes landfall over Baja California peninsula, set to pummel US Southwest

MEXICO CITY, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Tropical storm Hilary made landfall over the Baja California peninsula on Sunday, pelting the region with intense rain and heading toward the U.S. Southwest, where forecasters warned of life-threatening and "catastrophic" flooding.

One person died in Mexico amid reports of flash flooding in the peninsula, where some roads were swept away and images on social media showed raging torrents gushing down city streets that have been turned into rivers.

Rock-loaded train hit by mine explosion in southern Myanmar

YANGON, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- A rock-loaded train was hit by a mine explosion on the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway section in Mon State, southern Myanmar, according to the Mon State government.

No one was injured, but a section of the train track was cut off, an official from the state government told Xinhua on Sunday.

A freight train was also hit by mines on the Mandalay-Yangon railway section in the Bago Region in a similar incident on Friday.

Denmark joins Netherlands in offering F-16 jets to Ukraine as Zelenskyy visits

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands (AP) — Denmark will donate 19 19 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Sunday, hours after a similar offer from the Netherlands.

The offer came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited both countries.

Russia says Ukrainian drones attack four regions

MOSCOW, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Russia said Ukrainian drones had attacked four separate regions in a flurry of attempted strikes on Sunday, injuring five people and forcing two of Moscow's airports to briefly divert flights.

Russia's Kursk, Rostov and Belgorod regions, all of which border Ukraine, reported attempted drone strikes, while Russia's defence ministry said it had jammed a Ukrainian drone in the Moscow region, forcing it to crash in an unpopulated area.

UAE: A tanker believed to hold sanctioned Iran oil starts offloading near Texas despite Tehran’s threats

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An American-owned oil tanker long suspected of carrying sanctioned Iranian crude oil offloaded its cargo near Texas on Sunday, tracking data showed, even as Tehran has threatened to target shipping in the Persian Gulf over it.

Ship-tracking data analyzed by The Associated Press showed the Marshall Islands-flagged Suez Rajan began the hourslong ship-to-ship transfer of its oil to another tanker, the MR Euphrates, near Galveston, some 70 kilometers (45 miles) southeast of Houston.

Bus mishap kills 7 in north India

NEW DELHI, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people died and 28 were injured when a bus carrying around 35 passengers fell into a deep gorge in India's northern hilly state of Uttarakhand on Sunday, confirmed a local cop.

The accident took place on the Gangotri National Highway near Gangnani area, when the bus was moving from Gangotri to Uttarkashi area.

The injured were admitted to a local hospital, said a senior state government official.

Official says wildfire on Spain’s popular tourist island of Tenerife was started deliberately

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Canary Islands (AP) — Canary Islands regional President Fernando Clavijo said Sunday that police have confirmed that a wildfire raging on the Spanish tourist island of Tenerife was started deliberately.

Clavijo said police had opened three lines of investigation but did not say if there had been any arrests.

Improved weather conditions helped firefighters make advances overnight in their battle to tame the blaze that has raged out of control for the past five days, authorities said Sunday.
