British heatwave brings hottest day of 2023 so far

LONDON, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Britain recorded its hottest day of 2023 so far on Saturday, with provisional data showing a high of 33.2 degrees Celsius (91.8 degrees Fahrenheit) at London's Kew Gardens.

This year's previous high was 32.6 C, reached on Thursday.

Britain's national weather service said Saturday was also the sixth day in a row the country has recorded a temperature above 30 C, well above average for the time of year.

Türkiye welcomes African Union's permanent member in G20

ANKARA, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye welcomes the decision to grant the African Union (AU) in the Group of 20 (G20) as a full member, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

"We are pleased that the AU became a permanent member of G20 by the decision adopted at the G20 Summit in New Delhi," the ministry said in a statement.

"As a strategic partner of the AU, Türkiye spares no effort to enhance the representation of the AU in international fora and to make Africa's voice heard," it said.

Russia: Putin to meet Vice Premier of China, Vice President of Laos at EEF - Kremlin

"[Putin] will have international contacts. Vice President of Laos Pany Yathotou will be the main foreign guest at the forum. She will take part in the plenary session of the forum on September 12 together with President Putin. Saudi Arabia Discovers Cultural Relics In Ancient Mining Site

RIYADH, Sept 9 (NNN-SPA) – The Saudi Heritage Commission, announced yesterday, the discovery of cultural relics and monuments in an ancient mining site, in the south-western al-Bahah region.

The discoveries were made during the 2023 excavation season in al-Ma’malah, described by the commission as “one of the most important old mining sites in Saudi Arabia,” without detailing the era to which the site belongs.

Trump White House official Navarro convicted of contempt after defying House Jan. 6 subpoena

WASHINGTON (AP) — Trump White House official Peter Navarro was found guilty Thursday of contempt of Congress charges for refusing to cooperate with a congressional investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The verdict came after a short trial for Navarro, who served as a White House trade adviser under President Donald Trump and later promoted the Republican’s baseless claims of mass voter fraud in the 2020 election he lost.

USA: Georgia special grand jury recommended charges against 39 people, including Sen. Lindsey Graham

ATLANTA (AP) — The special grand jury that investigated efforts by Donald Trump and others to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results recommended indictments against twice as many people as the 19 ultimately charged by prosecutors, leaving South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham among those not indicted.

USA: The IRS plans to crack down on 1,600 millionaires to collect millions of dollars in back taxes

WASHINGTON (AP) — The IRS announced on Friday it is launching an effort to aggressively pursue 1,600 millionaires and 75 large business partnerships that owe hundreds of millions of dollars in past due taxes.

IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel said that with a boost in federal funding and the help of artificial intelligence tools, the agency has new means of targeting wealthy people who have “cut corners” on their taxes.
