Cambodia reports 3rd bird flu death this year

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- A two-year-old girl from southeastern Cambodia's Prey Veng province has died of H5N1 human avian influenza, the third death from the virus recorded in the country so far this year, the Ministry of Health said Monday.

The toddler tested positive for H5N1 bird flu on Monday, the ministry said in a news release, without specifying her time of death.

The ministry said Tamiflu (oseltamivir), an antiviral drug to prevent the bird flu from spreading, was distributed to people who had direct contact with the girl.

Ecuador extends state of emergency after prison deaths

GUAYAQUIL (Ecuador), Oct 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Ecuador extended by a month a state of emergency in place since the August assassination of presidential candidate and anti-graft crusader Fernando Villavicencio, the presidency announced.

The extension comes shortly after seven Colombians arrested over Villavicencio’s killing were found dead in prison.

Six of the suspects were killed Friday in the Guayas 1 prison in the port city of Guayaquil, while a seventh was found dead Saturday in a prison in the capital Quito.

UK: Russian nuclear test would send warning signal, prompt others to follow suit

LONDON, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Russia may be paving the way to conduct a nuclear test, a move that would sharply raise tensions with the West and likely prompt other world powers to resume testing for the first time this century.

President Vladimir Putin last week said Russia's parliament should consider withdrawing Moscow's ratification of the 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) which prohibits tests involving nuclear explosions. Parliamentary leaders were due to discuss the issue on Monday.

Pakistan: Senior Taliban officials visit villages struck by earthquake that killed at least 2,000 people

ISLAMABAD (AP) — A senior Taliban delegation was visiting western Afghanistan’s Herat province on Monday in the aftermath of the powerful earthquake that killed at least 2,000 people over the weekend and flattened entire villages, a statement said.

Saturday’s magnitude 6.3 quake hit a densely populated area in Herat and was followed by strong aftershocks in what was one of the deadliest temblors to strike the country in two decades.

Bangladesh dengue death toll nears 1,100

DHAKA, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from dengue fever in Bangladesh so far this year is nearing the 1,100 mark amid the worst outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease.

The Bangladeshi government Monday confirmed another 10 deaths from dengue fever, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country since January to 1,096.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health, the deaths include 107 in October, 396 in September, 342 in August and 204 in July.

Russian lawmakers given 10 days to study revoking nuclear test ban treaty ratification

MOSCOW, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Russian lawmakers were given 10 days on Monday to study how best to revoke Moscow's ratification of a landmark treaty banning nuclear tests, after President Vladimir Putin held out the possibility of resuming such testing.

Russia's envoy to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) said on Friday that Moscow would revoke its ratification of the pact, a move that Washington denounced as endangering "the global norm" against nuclear test blasts.

An independent inquiry opens into the alleged unlawful killings by UK special forces in Afghanistan

LONDON (AP) — An independent inquiry opened Monday to examine claims that British special forces murdered dozens of Afghan men during counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan a decade ago, as well as allegations that authorities subsequently covered up the alleged illegal activity or failed to investigate it properly.

The inquiry, which opened at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, focuses on alleged unlawful killings that took place during night raids carried out by elite military units in the war-torn nation between 2010 and 2013.
