Chennai airport runway flooded as Cyclone Michaung nears India

CHENNAI, Dec 4 (Reuters) - At least four people died, factories closed and the runway of one of India's busiest airports lay submerged due to torrential rain, as two southern states were braced on Monday for the impact of a severe cyclone.

Cyclone Michaung was expected to make landfall on the coast of the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh around noon on Tuesday, the country's weather office said, with sustained winds of 90-100 kph (56-62 mph), gusting to 110 kph.

S. Korea conducts test flight of solid-fuel space rocket

SEOUL, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- South Korea on Monday conducted the third test flight of its solid-fuel space rocket, the Ministry of National Defense said.

The launch was carried out in waters near the country's southern resort island of Jeju earlier in the day, and a commercial satellite was put into orbit.

It was the third of its kind to test-launch the homegrown solid-fuel space rocket.

During the second test flight in December 2022, the launch vehicle was mounted with a dummy satellite.

Iran, EU Call For Swift Cessation Of Gaza Conflict

TEHRAN, Dec 4 (NNN-IRNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, have highlighted the necessity to end the conflict in the Gaza Strip as soon as possible.

Indonesia's Marapi volcano erupts, killing 11 climbers; 12 missing

JAKARTA, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Eleven climbers were found dead in Indonesia on Monday and 12 were missing after the Marapi volcano erupted in West Sumatra, a rescue official said, as search operations - which were halted temporarily over safety concerns - resumed.

Three survivors were found on Monday along with the bodies of the 11 climbers, out of 75 who were in the area at the time of Sunday's eruption, said Jodi Haryawan, spokesperson for the search and rescue team, adding they were all local climbers.

Israel investigates possible trading knowledge ahead of Oct 7 Hamas attack

JERUSALEM, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Israeli authorities are investigating claims by U.S. researchers that some investors may have known in advance of a Hamas plan to attack Israel on Oct. 7 and used that information to profit from Israeli securities.

Research by law professors Robert Jackson Jr from New York University and Joshua Mitts of Columbia University found significant short-selling of shares leading up to the attacks, which triggered a war nearly two months old.

Germany: Rheinmetall to supply Ukraine with artillery ammunition worth 142 mln euros in 2025

BERLIN, December 4. /TASS/: Germany’s arms manufacturer Rheinmetall will supply Ukraine with artillery ammunition worth 142 mln euros in 2025, the company said in a statement.

"Rheinmetall has won a large-volume order for supporting Ukraine with artillery ammunition <...> worth around 142 million euros," the statement reads. "The ammunition will be delivered in 2025," Rheinmetall said.

Palestinian president refuses Israel's plans to occupy parts of Gaza

RAMALLAH, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stressed on Monday that he rejects Israel's plans to "separate, occupy, cut off or isolate any part of the Gaza Strip," which is "an integral part of the Palestinian state," according to a statement by the official Palestinian News Agency (WAFA).

"It's necessary to immediately stop the aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, and spare civilians from the scourge of bombing and destruction carried out by Israel," Abbas said in a phone call with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris.

Venezuelans approve referendum to claim sovereignty over region of Guyana

CARACAS, Dec 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Venezuelan electoral authorities on Sunday claimed that 95 percent of voters in a nonbinding referendum approved of the nation’s territorial claim on a huge chunk of neighbouring oil-rich Guyana.

Putin to visit UAE, Saudi Arabia this week - Russian news outlet

MOSCOW, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia this week, Russian news outlet Shot reported on Monday, citing Putin's aide Yury Ushakov.

The reported visit comes after the OPEC+ group of oil producers, which includes all three countries, agreed last Thursday to voluntary output cuts totalling about 2.2 million barrels a day.

Saudi minister engages global aviation leaders at ICAN 2023, emphasizes economic impact of air transport

RIYADH, Dec 4 (APP): Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser on Monday participated in the ministerial session themed “Impact of air transport on economic development” at the 15th International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Air Services Negotiation event, ICAN 2023.

According to SPA, the event, hosted by GACA, drew participation from aviation industry leaders spanning over 100 countries and witnessed discussions among ministers and heads of civil aviation agencies.
