Norway mosque shooting suspect appears in court

12 August 2019; DW: The 21-year old man is suspected of opening fire in a mosque and breaching anti-terror laws. He has plead not guilty and refused to be interrogated by authorities.

A man held by Norwegian authorities as a suspect in the shooting at the al-Noor Islamic Centre, outside of Oslo, appeared in court on Monday. The 21-year-old is also suspected to have murdered his 17-year-old stepsister.

Time running out for MPs to stop no-deal Brexit: think-tank

LONDON, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Time is running out for "Remain"-supporting politicians to prevent an ultimate no-deal Brexit, a London-based think tank said Monday.

The Institute for Government (IfG) said in a 22-page report that many of the previous avenues to stopping no-deal are no longer available to the House of Commons.

The paper, titled "Voting on Brexit: Parliament's Role before 31 October" said that even if members of parliament (MPs) succeeded in amending or voting down new laws, it would only limit the government's powers, rather than manage to prevent a no-deal.

Norway police probe mosque shooting as ‘attempted act of terrorism’

STOCKHOLM, Aug 12 (NNN-AGENCIES ) – A shooting at a mosque in Norway is being treated as an “attempted act of terrorism,” police said on Sunday, but the male suspect has so far declined to answer police questions.

“He still doesn’t wish to give an explanation,” Grete Lien Metlid, assistant chief of the Oslo police district, told dpa late Sunday.

The suspect, a Norwegian in his early 20s, was arrested in connection with Saturday’s incident at the Al-Noor Islamic Centre mosque in Baerum, west of Oslo.

Fire east of Athens under control; some homes damaged

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A big fire that spread quickly overnight in an eastern suburb of Athens appeared to be under control soon after dawn Monday.

The fire had raced up the slopes of 1,026-meter (3,366 feet) Mount Hymettus, which separates suburban Peania from the main city. Flames shooting up the mountain on what was a pretty extensive front could be seen from Athens early Monday morning. Alarm lights were flashing at the flat mountaintop, occupied by an army communications base and transmission antennas for Greece’s main TV stations.

RUSADA reports over 150 cases of suspected anti-doping violations in 2019

MOSCOW, August 10. /TASS/: The Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) has registered 151 cases of possible anti-doping rule violations from January to July 2019, RUSADA Deputy Director General Margarita Pakhnotskaya told TASS on Saturday.

According to the submitted data, RUSADA revealed more anti-doping rule violations in the first seven months of 2019 than throughout 2018 (151 and 146 respectively).

Pakhnotskaya added that in July the agency’s inspectors reported 49 suspected anti-doping rule violations.

Russian PM to visit Turkmenistan for participation in Caspian Economic Forum

MOSCOW, August 11. /TASS/: Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will pay a two-day visit to Turkmenia, where he will participate in the first Caspian Economic Forum and meet President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, press service of the Russian government reports.

The main program of the Forum is scheduled on Monday. The Russian Prime Minister will speak at the plenary session of the Forum and visit the International Exhibition of Innovative Technologies of Caspian States where Russia’s display will be presented.

Putin congratulates the Muslims of Russia on the Eid al-Adha Islamic holiday
