India: Anti-CAA stir: SC refuses to discharge Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi in NIA case, grants bail pending trial

New Delhi, Apr 18 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld an order of the Gauhati High Court which had set aside the discharge of independent Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi in connection with a case related to anti-CAA protests and suspected Maoist links.

Allowing an appeal filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the high court had remanded the matter back to the trial court to conduct a fresh hearing on the question of framing of charge against all the four accused persons including Gogoi.

India: Delhi govt approves laying of sewer lines in unauthorised colonies of Sangam Vihar

New Delhi, Apr 18 (PTI) The Delhi government has approved a project to lay a 25.5-km-long sewer line in 11 unauthorised colonies of Sangam Vihar.

The project will provide relief to around 3 lakh people suffering from sewage problems.

According to Water Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, the colonies of Ambedkar Nagar and Deoli Assembly in Sangam Vihar will be connected with the sewer line so that treated water can flow into the Yamuna.

India-Russia trade imbalance, payment issue important: EAM Jaishankar

New Delhi, Apr 17 (PTI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday called for urgently addressing India's trade imbalance with Russia even as he described the partnership between the two countries as among the steadiest of major relationships globally.

In presence of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, Jaishankar said at an event that finding a solution to the imbalance really means addressing the impediments such as market access issues, non-tariff barriers and those relating to payments or logistics.

WTO panel rules against India's import duties on certain ICT products in dispute with Japan, EU; India to appeal

New Delhi, Apr 17 (PTI) The dispute panel of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on Monday said the import duties imposed by India on certain informational and technology products violates global trading norms, a decision which New Delhi will challenge at the appellate body of the Geneva-based multilateral organisation.

The ruling followed a dispute filed by the European Union, Japan and Taiwan against these duties in the WTO.

India: Two weeks before killing, Atiq moved SC for protection in UP police custody

New Delhi, Apr 16 (PTI) Two weeks before gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad was shot dead while under police escort in Prayagraj, the Supreme Court had dismissed his plea seeking protection during his custody with the Uttar Pradesh Police in the Umesh Pal murder case.

Ahmad (60) and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college for a checkup.

India: Plea in SC for independent committee probe into killings of Atiq, Ashraf

New Delhi, Apr 16 (PTI) A day after gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead under police escort, a plea was filed in the Supreme Court on Sunday seeking the constitution of an independent expert committee headed by a former apex court judge to probe the killings.

The plea, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, also sought an inquiry into the 183 encounters that have taken place in Uttar Pradesh since 2017.

New Delhi, Apr 16 (PTI) Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on Sunday flagged "procedural lapses" in summoning a day-long session of the Delhi Assembly on April 17, drawing a sharp reaction from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who said he would want the LG to study the Constitution again.

This came on a day Kejriwal was questioned for about nine hours by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.
