US shoots down Chinese 'spy' balloon over South Carolina

05 Feb 2023; MEMO: The US shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon on Saturday which had been spotted above US airspace off the coast of South Carolina, Anadolu reports.

An operation is underway to recover debris from the balloon in the Atlantic Ocean.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the decision was made at the direction of US President Biden.

US to ‘take care’ of Chinese weather balloon — Biden

WASHINGTON, February 4. /TASS/: The United States will ‘take care’ of the situation with the Chinese meteorological balloon flying in US airspace, President Joe Biden said on Saturday.

At the Hancock airbase, New York, reporters asked the president to comment on the situation with the Chinese balloon.

"We’re going to take care of it," the White House pool quoted Biden as saying. He did not clarify his words.

USA: 50-car train derailment causes big fire, evacuations in Ohio

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (AP) — A train derailment and resulting large fire prompted an evacuation order in an Ohio village near the Pennsylvania state line on Friday night, covering the area in billows of smoke lit orange by the flames below.

About 50 cars derailed in East Palestine as a train was carrying a variety of freight from Madison, Illinois, to Conway, Pennsylvania, rail operator Norfolk Southern said in a statement Saturday. There was no immediate information about what caused the derailment. No injuries were reported.
