UN chief calls for solidarity to address common challenges

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The 77th session of the UN General Assembly opened on Tuesday, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for solidarity among member states to address common challenges.

The many challenges that defined the 76th session of the General Assembly are still very much around as the new session starts, Guterres told the opening of the 77th session.

US sets up Afghan relief fund with frozen central bank money

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. and Swiss governments and Afghan economics experts said Wednesday they will transfer $3.5 billion in frozen funds from Afghanistan’s central bank to use for the country’s people as hunger grips every province there.

Notably, the Taliban government will not be a part of the new Afghan Fund, which will maintain its account with the Bank for International Settlements in Switzerland.

Driven by consumers, US inflation grows more persistent

USA: Conservative Bolduc wins New Hampshire’s GOP Senate primary

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Retired Army Brig. Gen. Donald Bolduc won New Hampshire’s Senate Republican primary on Wednesday and will face potentially vulnerable Democratic incumbent Maggie Hassan in November – setting up another test of whether a fierce conservative can appeal to more moderate general election voters.

Bolduc wasn’t formally endorsed by former President Donald Trump but has said he believes Trump won the 2020 election and has espoused conspiracy theories about vaccines. The former president called him a “strong guy, tough guy.”

UN Security Council Called For Donations For Yemen Oil Tanker Rescue

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 13 (NNN-YPA) – Members of the Security Council, yesterday, made an unusual plea, to help avoid a “catastrophic ecological, maritime, and humanitarian risk, posed by the Safer tanker” off Yemen.

In a press statement, the council members reiterated their deep concern about the threat posed by the derelict oil storage tanker, anchored off the port of Hodeidah, and commended pledges for a UN emergency operation for the tanker.

Canada's Trudeau announces C$4.5 bln inflation relief package for low earners

OTTAWA, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced C$4.5 billion ($3.43 billion) in measures on Tuesday intended to provide relief from high inflation to low-income families.

The measures include doubling a quarterly tax credit sent to individuals and families with low and modest incomes to offset sales tax, and a C$500, onetime top-up to a housing benefit that is provided to low earners who need help with rent, Trudeau said.
