SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea confirmed Thursday it has carried out its first underwater-launched ballistic missile test in three years, in an apparent bid to dial up pressure on the United States ahead of a weekend resumption of their nuclear diplomacy.

SEOUL, Oct 2 (NNN-YONHAP) – This year’s 18th typhoon Mitag is approaching the southern regions of South Korea, the country’s weather service said today.

The mid-strength typhoon is forecast to make a landfall in waters near the country’s southwest port city of Mokpo, at about midnight, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

The maximum wind speed is reported at 29 metres per second, with its central pressure of 980 hecto-pascals. The strength of the typhoon is expected to be weaker when it arrives at the southern region.

An explosion occurred on the Stolt Groenland, a 25,000-tonne, Cayman Island-flagged oil tanker, at the southern port of Ulsan at around 10:50 a.m. (0150 GMT), a coastguard official said.

There were 25 sailors aboard, including Russians and Filipinos.

NAIROBI, Sept 26 (NNN-KBC) — Parliament has been advised to rescind its approval of the nomination of Mwende Mwinzi for appointment as Kenya’s Ambassador to Seoul, South Korea.

National Assembly’s Committee on Implementation says Mwinzi’s declaration that she will not renounce her US citizenship had left the appointing authority with no choice but to seek her replacement.

The Committee has further recommended that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiates an audit of all serving Ambassadors and High Commissioners to ascertain whether any of them holds dual citizenship.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s spy agency told lawmakers in a private briefing Tuesday that nuclear negotiations between the United States and North Korea will likely resume within two to three weeks, according to one of the lawmakers who attended the session.

SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Monday that his country will do all it can for the denuclearization talks between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States.

Moon made the remarks during a weekly meeting with his senior secretaries, saying the working-level talks between Pyongyang and Washington will resume soon.

Moon noted that his government will do whatever it can to open a future of co-prosperity with the peace settlement and the peace economy on the Korean Peninsula.
