BERLIN (AP) — Israel’s president addressed Germany’s parliament on Tuesday about atrocities committed during the Third Reich, while at the same time praising the close and friendly relations that have emerged between the two countries since the end of the Holocaust.

BERLIN, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Germany's government will use income from windfall taxes to lower end-consumer prices for gas, oil and coal, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday, announcing measures to mitigate the impact of rising energy prices on its population.

Scholz said the government plans to tie certain social benefits to the current or expected inflation rate in the future and will earmark 1.5 billion euros ($1.49 billion) for a discounted public transportation offer.

BERLIN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- German flag carrier Lufthansa canceled almost all its flights to and from Frankfurt and Munich for Friday -- around 800 flights in total -- because of a strike by pilots, the company said on Thursday.

The first flights were already canceled on Thursday. An estimated 130,000 passengers will be affected by the cancelations, according to the airline.

He was speaking at the Charles University in Prague on Monday. His statement was streamed on the German government’s website.

"A system created by joint efforts would be a security benefit for the whole of Europe," Scholz said, adding that it would be less costly and more efficient than any solutions at the national level.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany has decided to boost its air defense capabilities, and wants to work with its EU partners to develop a broader system.

“In Europe, we have a serious backlog in terms of air defense, against threats from air and space,” he said, in a keynote speech at the Charles University in Prague.
