UN tries to save Black Sea grain deal with 'mutually beneficial' proposal

31 May 2023; MEMO: The UN has proposed that Kyiv, Moscow and Ankara start preparatory work for the transit of Russian ammonia through Ukraine as it tries to salvage a deal allowing safe Black Sea grain exports, a source close to the talks said on Wednesday, Reuters reports.

Jordan: unemployment rate drops to 21.9%

01 June 2023; MEMO: Jordan's unemployment rate declined to 21.9 per cent in the first quarter of this year, compared to 22.8 per cent at the end of 2022, the Department of Statistics said.

In a statement issued yesterday, the department said the unemployment rate among males reached 19.6 per cent, compared to 30.7 per cent for females, in the first quarter of 2023.

The unemployment rate among university degree holders is about 25.8 per cent.

Merkel mediation between EU, Turkiye regarding transfer of natural gas

Arab League welcomes European trade union's decision to boycott settlement goods

01 June 2023; MEMO: The League of Arab States has welcomed the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC)'s decision to boycott products made in illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Arab League also welcomed the ETUC's call for "regulatory measures" to prevent EU legal entities from importing or exporting products manufactured in illegal Israeli settlements in accordance with EU treaties and international law.

Turkiye: West pressuring Ankara to impose sanctions on Russia

30 May 2023; MEMO: Western countries have been putting considerable pressure on Ankara for a year and a half to impose sanctions on Russia but Ankara, presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told Al-Khabar TV yesterday.

"They … demand sanctions, and ask why we are cooperating with the Russian Federation," he added. "But we did not listen to anyone, and we celebrated … delivering the first fuel shipment to the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant."

US imposes sanctions on major Syria financial facilitators

30 May 2023; MEMO: The US Treasury Department announced, Tuesday, on two Syrian money service businesses and allies of Hezbollah and the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) for secretly helping the regime under Bashar Al-Assad maintain access to the international financial system in violation of international sanctions, Reuters reports.

Ukraine Parliament adopts 50-year Iran sanctions Bill

30 May 2023; MEMO: Ukrainian legislators have approved a Bill imposing 50 years of sanctions on Iran over its supply of drones to Russia, a lawmaker said, Anadolu Agency reports.

Yaroslav Zheleznyak said on Telegram, Monday, which the Parliament, also known as the Verkhovna Rada, approved the Bill with 328 votes in favour of the measures.

Egypt, Turkiye agree to immediately exchange ambassadors

30 May 2023; MEMO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday agreed on "the immediate start of upgrading diplomatic relations, exchanging ambassadors."

Egypt's presidency said in a statement that Al-Sisi spoke to Erdogan on the phone to congratulate him on his victory in the presidential elections and his re-election as president of Turkiye, while the Turkish president expressed appreciation for the kind gesture.
