Over 3,000 people died or went missing at sea in hope of reaching Europe: UN

29 April 2022; MEMO: More than 3,000 people died or went missing while trying to cross into European countries in 2021, an official from the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Friday, and Anadolu News Agency reports.

The people died or went missing while attempting to cross the Central and Western Mediterranean and Atlantic to Europe, UNHCR spokesperson, Shabia Mantoo, said at a press briefing in Geneva.

Anti-Muslim acts rose by 9% in the US - CAIR report

Trump says he has no plans to rejoin Twitter

New York, Apr 26 (AP) Former President Donald Trump said Monday that he has no intention of rejoining Twitter even if his account is reinstated following Elon Musk's agreement to buy the social media giant for roughly 44 billion.

Trump told Fox News that he will instead focus on his own platform, Truth Social, which has been mired in problems since its launch earlier this year.

Kuwait envoy survives gun attack in Washington

25 April 2022; MEMO: A Kuwaiti diplomat in Washington has survived a gun attack in the US capital, Al-Rai newspaper has reported. Mohammad Al-Omairi's vehicle was hit by 14 bullets.

The envoy was reportedly waiting in his car outside his children's school at the time of the attack. He escaped unharmed.

It has not yet been confirmed if the attack was an assassination attempt or whether Omairi was an innocent bystander at the scene of the shooting.

Former US commander admits mistake in supporting Syria's Kurds

23 April 2022; MEMO: A former US military commander has admitted his country's mistake in supporting the Kurds in Syria against Turkey.

Former commander of the US forces Ben Hodges announced in statements to the Turkish Haberturk TV channel: "I know that these words may surprise the Turks, but we must admit our mistake."

White House commits to barring anti-satellite missile tests

Washington, Apr 19 (AP) The Biden administration announced Monday it is barring anti-satellite missile testing by the United States, a move that White House officials say is meant to underscore its hopes of establishing new norms for military action in space.

The U.S. has sharply criticised Russia and China for conducting anti-satellite missile tests, although it also used an interceptor missile fired from a U.S. Navy warship more than 14 years ago to destroy a malfunctioning spy satellite.

USA: Biden increases oil royalty rate, scales back lease sales

Montana, Apr 16 (AP) The Interior Department has said it's moving forward with the first onshore sales of public oil and gas drilling leases under President Joe Biden, but will sharply increase royalty rates for companies as federal officials weigh efforts to fight climate change against pressure to bring down high gas prices.

The royalty rate for new leases will increase to 18.75% from 12.5%. That's a 50% jump and marks the first increase to royalties for the federal government since the early 1900s.
