India records 61,537 new COVID-19 cases, 933 deaths in a day

New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI) With India registering 61,537 more cases, the coronavirus tally reached 20,88,611 on Saturday, while 14,27,005 people have so far recuperated from COVID-19 pushing the recovery rate to 68.32 per cent, the Union health ministry said.

The death toll due to the disease rose to 42,518 with 933 fresh fatalities being reported in a day, data updated at 8 am showed.

India: UP: Man held for objectionable post on Prophet Muhammad

Bahraich (UP), Aug 7 (PTI) A man was arrested here on Friday for making objectionable comments on Prophet Muhammad on the social media.

One Mufti Abdullah has complained that an objectionable Facebook post by Guddu Verma of Nanpara township has hurt the religious feelings of Muslims, additional SP Kunvar Jyananjay Singh said.

Mufti alleged that comments made by Verma in the post are aimed at creating communal tension in Nanpara township, the ASP said.

India: Madhya Pradesh cops assault Sikhs

Barwani (MP), Aug 7 (PTI) Two Sikhs were allegedly assaulted by policemn in Madhya Pradesh, prompting the BJP-led state government to suspend two cops in this connection.

Those assaulted include a granthi (caretaker of a gurdwara and reader of Guru Granth Sahib, the central religious scripture of Sikhism), an official said.

The government said assistant sub-inspector Sitaram Bhatnagar and head constable Mohan Jamre have been suspended for not following due procedure while detaining the Sikhs.

India: 22 held for hunting nilgai in Chhattisgarh

Korba, Aug 7 (PTI) Twenty-two people were held for killing a nilgai in a forest in Chhattisgarh's Balrampur district, and the animal's carcass as well as four guns had been seized, an official said on Friday.

A tip off was received on August 3 about villagers hunting a nilgai (a large type of antelope) in Chando forest range after which the area was raided to nab the culprits, Lakshman Singh, Divisional Forest Officer, Balrampur division said.

Balrampur is some 450 kilometres from Raipur.

Death toll in Air India Express flight crash rises to 18

Kozhikode(Ker),Aug 8 (PTI) The death toll in the Air India Express flight crash at the airport here, rose to 18 on Saturday with one more passenger succumbing to injuries.

Malappuram District Collector K Gopalakrishnan told reporters here that one more passenger had succumbed to injuries.

Plane skids off runway in India; 17 killed, including pilots

NEW DELHI (AP) — At least 17 people were killed and 123 injured when a special return flight for Indians stranded abroad because of the coronavirus skidded off a hilltop runway and cracked in two while landing Friday in heavy rain in the southern state of Kerala, police said.

Among the injured, at least 15 were in critical condition, said Abdul Karim, a senior Kerala state police officer. Rescue operations were over, he said.

The dead included both pilots of the Air India Express flight, the airline said in a statement, adding that the four cabin crew members were safe.

India: One person arrested in 12-year-old's sexual assault case

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) The Delhi Police on Thursday arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl in Paschim Vihar area here, officials said.

The accused, Krishan, was identified on the basis of CCTV footage and has a criminal record, they said.
