India: Every farmer-labourer part of movement a 'satyagrahi': Rahul

New Delhi, Jan 3 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday compared the ongoing farmers' protests against the three new Central agriculture-related laws with the Champaran agitation during the British rule, and said every farmer-labourer part of the current movement is a 'satyagrahi' and they will take their rights back.

"The country is going to face a Champaran-like tragedy. British were 'company Bahadur' back then and now Modi-friends are 'company Bahadur'," Gandhi alleged in a tweet in Hindi.

India: Case lodged over 'death threat' to Punjab Chief Minister

Mohali, Jan 2 (PTI) Police have registered a case against an unidentified person here over a poster that issued a death threat against Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

The poster was pasted on a guide map near the Sector 66-67 crossing and 10 lakh dollars was offered for killing the chief minister, according to police.

An email ID was also found written on the poster. Investigations are underway and footage of the CCTV cameras installed near the spot are also being scanned, police said.

India: Paddy procurement hit in C'garh as FCI not lifting stock

Raipur, Jan 2 (PTI) Purported delay in lifting of rice from Chhattisgarh by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) for the Central pool has been affecting procurement of paddy at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) at some centres in the Congress-ruled state, a senior official said on Saturday.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over phone requesting to ensure that the Union food and public distribution department immediately issue a final order allowing the FCI to lift rice from the state.

India: Farmer protesting against agri laws kills self

Ghaziabad, Jan 2 (PTI) A 75-year-old farmer protesting against the Centre's new agri laws allegedly hanged himself at the Uttar Pradesh-Delhi border in Ghazipur on Saturday morning.

Sardar Kashmir Singh, a native of Bilaspur in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur district, hanged himself in a mobile toilet using a rope, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police of Indirapuram Anshu Jain told PTI that a suicide note written in Gurumukhi was found on him.

India: Honour killing in Haryana over intercaste marriage

Chandigarh, Jan 2 (PTI) A 23-year-old man who married a woman belonging to a different caste was stabbed to death allegedly by his brother-in-law in Panipat, police said on Saturday, the second suspected case of honour killing in Haryana in the past three days.

Neeraj had married in November, but the brother of the woman was unhappy over the marriage, according to police.

Chandigarh, Jan 2 (PTI) AAP leader Raghav Chadha on Saturday met 'arhtiyas' or commission agents who were recently raided by the Income Tax Department.

Chadha, who is AAP Punjab co-incharge, accused the Centre of harassing the commission agents for supporting farmers who were up in arms against the Centre's three farm laws.

India: 2 Chinese among 4 held for running instant loan app

Chennai, Jan 2 (PTI): Two Chinese and as many Indian nationals have been arrested for allegedly operating instant loan apps, police said on Saturday.

Investigation, based on a complaint here, revealed the prime accused to be operating from China, the police said.

The two Indians had been operating the call centre from Bengaluru and had employed over 100 people to provide quick online loans, they said.

India OKs AstraZeneca and locally made COVID-19 vaccines

NEW DELHI (AP) — India authorized two COVID-19 vaccines on Sunday, paving the way for a huge inoculation program to stem the coronavirus pandemic in the world’s second most populous country.

The country’s drugs regulator gave emergency authorization for the vaccine developed by Oxford University and U.K.-based drugmaker AstraZeneca, and another developed by the Indian company Bharat Biotech.

India: "Pro Pak" slogans: innocent people arrested, says SDPI

Mangaluru, Jan 1 (PTI) The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Friday alleged that police had arrested innocent people on the charges of raising pro-Pakistan slogans during the gram panchayat vote counting process at Ujire in Dakshina Kannada district on December 30.

SDPI state secretary Ashraf Machar told reporters here that three party workers had been arrested at midnight without any evidence and accused of raising pro-Pakistan slogans.
