Record 145,384 Daily Cases Take India’s COVID-19 Tally To 13,205,926

NEW DELHI, Apr 10 (NNN-PTI) – A fresh high of 145,384 new COVID-19 cases were registered in the past 24 hours in India, taking the country’s tally to 13,205,926, according to the official data, released by the federal health ministry today.

It was the fifth time within this week and the fourth consecutive day that more than 100,000 new cases were reported in India.

As many as 794 deaths took place since yesterday morning, taking the total death toll to 168,436.

India: 'Public streets should not be blocked': SC

New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI) Public streets should not be blocked , observed the Supreme Court on Friday while hearing a plea of a Noida-based woman alleging difficulties in commuting to Delhi for work due to road blockades by protesting farmers.

A bench comprising justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Hemant Gupta took note of the reply of Delhi Police Commissioner on the plea and said for proper adjudication, the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are also needed to be made parties.

India: ECI removes officer posted in Mamata Banerjee's security

Kolkata, Apr 9 (PTI) The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday removed an SP rank officer posted in the security of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, an official said.

The step against Asoke Chakraborty, an officer on special duty (OSD) in an ex-cadre post in the rank of superintendent of police, is believed to have been taken because of "security lapses" which led to Banerjee's foot injury in Nandigram last month, he said.

"He is removed from the post with immediate effect," the official in the state CEO's office said.

India: EC notice to Mamata Banerjee over remark on central forces

New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI) The Election Commission (EC) has issued a notice to West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee for her alleged statements against central armed police forces deputed on election duty in the state.

The notice issued on Thursday night said Banerjee prima facie violated various sections of the Indian Penal Code with her remarks against the central forces.

The chief minister has been asked to respond to the notice by 11 am on Saturday.

India: Is it right to export vaccines, put countrymen at risk: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday questioned the export of COVID-19 vaccines, and asked if it is right to do so and put the lives of countrymen in danger.

He said vaccine shortage is a very serious problem during Corona times and is not a celebration.

Gandhi also called upon the central government to help states without any bias and help provide them with more vaccines.

"Shortage of vaccine in view of the rise in Corona cases is a very serious problem and not a celebration," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

India: Naxals release abducted CoBRA commando in Chhattisgarh

Bijapur, Apr 8 (PTI) CoBRA commando Rakeshwar Singh Manhas, who was abducted by Naxals after the last week's fierce gun-battle in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, was released on Thursday, police said.

Manhas, who belonged to the 210th battalion of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), an elite unit of the CRPF, had gone missing after the gunfight on Saturday and later reported to be in the captivity of the Naxals.

India: Mahmudpur village in Mathura renamed to Parasauli

Mathura, Apr 8 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has renamed Mathura's Mahmudpur village as Parasauli, an official said on Thursday.

Confirming it, District Magistrate Navneet Singh Chahal said a gazette notification has been issued, renaming the village in Goverdhan tehsil.

The village is associated with Bhakti saint Surdas, who had spent over seven decades here, an office-bearer of Surdas Braj Ras Sthali Vikas Samiti said here, adding that they have been demanding a change in the name since 1982.
