India: Man hacks six of family to death in AP village

Visakhapatnam, Apr 15 (PTI) A person allegedly hacked six members of a family, including an infant, to death and later surrendered to the police at a village in Visakhapatnam district early on Thursday.

City Commissioner of Police Manish Kumar Sinha visited Juttada village under Pendurthi mandal to take stock of the situation.

Police said Battina Appala Raju attacked the family members of Bammidi Ramana with a large sickle, allegedly owing to a running feud between the two families for some time now.

India: Petrol price cut by 16 paise, diesel 14 paise

New Delhi, Apr 15 (PTI) Petrol price on Thursday was cut by 16 paise per litre and diesel by 14 paise -- the fourth minor reduction in rates in three weeks that followed six months of relentless price increases.

Petrol now costs Rs 90.40 per litre in Delhi, down from Rs 90.56, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers.

A litre of diesel comes for Rs 80.73 per litre as against Rs 80.87 previously.

Rates have been reduced across the country and vary from state to state depending on the local incidence of taxation (VAT).

India will raise its climate ambitions but not under pressure: Javadekar

New Delhi, Apr 14 (PTI) Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday said India will raise its climate ambitions but not under pressure, and that it will not allow anybody to forget their historical responsibility.

He also said that India is suffering because of the mistakes of others and "is not responsible for climate change that is happening".

Javadekar made the remarks during a speech after a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian at the French Embassy.

With 200,000 in 1 day, India skyrockets past 14M Covid cases

NEW DELHI (AP) — India reported more than 200,000 new coronavirus cases Thursday, skyrocketing past 14 million overall as an intensifying outbreak puts a grim weight on its fragile health care system.

In the capital, New Delhi, more than a dozen hotels and wedding banquet halls were ordered to be converted into COVID-19 centers attached to hospitals.

“The surge is alarming,” said S.K. Sarin, a government health expert in New Delhi.

India’s Monthly Palm Oil Imports From Malaysia Rise 50 Per Cent

NEW DELHI, April 14 (NNN-Bernama) — India’s palm oil imports from Malaysia rose 50 per cent in March compared with February’s volumes as the country’s monthly overall edible imports grew.

Latest data from Mumbai-based trade group Solvent Extractors’ Association (SEA) showed Indian imports of palm oil from Malaysia in March were made up of 270,195 tonnes of crude palm oil (CPO), 1,500 tonnes of RBD palmolein and 11,082 tonnes of crude palm kernel oil (CPKO).

In February, the country imported 187,387 tonnes of Malaysian palm oil.

India: Sunni Waqf Board moves HC against Varanasi court order

Allahabad, Apr 13 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board on Tuesday moved an urgent petition before the Allahabad High Court in the Kashi Vishwanath Mandi-Gyanvapi Masjid case in which the trial court at Varanasi allowed an ASI study of the mosque on April 8.

Sunni Central Waqf Board's standing counsel Puneet Kumar Gupta argued that the trial court passed the order illegally and without its jurisdiction as the matter is in the high court and Justice Prakash Pandia reserved its order on March 15 this year.

India: HC rejects Assam tribunal order declaring man foreigner

Guwahati, Apr 13 (PTI) The Gauhati High Court has set aside an order of a tribunal of Assam declaring a man "foreigner" and observed that the person does not need to explain the linkage with all his relatives featured in voters lists to establish his citizenship.

The Foreigners Tribunal III of Barpeta had ordered that Mohd Haider Ali is a foreigner as he could not establish his linkage with some of his relatives whose names figure in the voters list, though he did so in the case of his parents and grandparents.

India: UP panchayat polls begin tomorrow

Lucknow, Apr 14 (PTI) Voting for the first of the four-phase Uttar Pradesh panchayat elections, seen as a semi-final to the 2022 Assembly election, will be held on Thursday in 18 districts with ballot papers.

More than 3.33 lakh candidates in the fray in over 2.21 lakh seats in the first phase for the posts of zila panchayat (district council) members, kshetra (block) panchayat members, village panchayat heads and wards.

Polling will take place from 7 am to 6 pm.

India: Uttar Pradesh CM tests positive for COVID-19

Lucknow, Apr 14 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said he has tested positive for COVID-19.

He had on Tuesday isolated himself after some officials in his contact tested positive for coronavirus.

"After initial symptoms, I got myself tested. My report is positive. I am in self-isolation and following doctors advice. I am doing all the works virtually," Adityanath tweeted from his official Twitter handle.

India: Anomalies persist at bus depot, railways station

Kanpur: Various irregularities have been seen at the city's inter-state Jhakarkatti bus station. In his inspection even the divisional commissioner his expressed his serious annoyance. 

When there is given so much emphasis on ways to control the virus, the Covid help desk was not involved in extending helping hand to the passengers at the bus station. 

What remained more surprising was that the bus conductor was neither provided with hand sanitizer nor mask. The passengers and the roadways employees were also not wearing mask.
