India: Bodies of woman, 2 daughters found in Rohini river in UP's Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur (UP), May 25 (PTI) The bodies of a 40-year-old woman and her two daughters were found floating in the Rohini river here, police said on Tuesday.

The girls were tied to their mother's saree and the three didn't have any injury marks on their bodies, they said, adding it was a suspected case of suicide.

The bodies of Maya and her daughters, Shivani (13) and Arpita (9), were found floating in the river in Jangal Kaudia locality of the Pipiganj area on Monday morning.

India: Dalit man attacked over mustache by 11 people in Guj

Ahmedabad, May 24 (PTI) A Dalit man was attacked in Viramgam taluka in Gujarat's Ahmedabad allegedly by 11 people for sporting a long mustache, and three people have been arrested so far in the incident, police said on Monday.

Suresh Vaghela (22), who belongs to a Scheduled Caste community, in his complaint, has said 11 members of an Other Backward Classes (OBC) group attacked him for sporting a mustache, Deputy Superintendent of Police D S Vyas said.

"Vaghela is undergoing treatment in a hospital. We have arrested three people so far," the Deputy SP added.

India: Assam CM Himanta defends proposed cow protection bill

Guwahati, May 24 (PTI) Defending the proposed cow protection bill in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the ruling BJP on Monday said beef should not be consumed in places where Hindus live and the bovine is worshipped.

During a discussion on the motion of thanks on the Governor's address in Assam Assembly, the opposition AIUDF feared that the propsed bill will encourage incidents of mob lynching like those in the "cow belt" in northern India.

Thousands evacuated in India as strong cyclone inches closer

NEW DELHI (AP) — Tens of thousands of people were evacuated Tuesday in low-lying areas of two Indian states and moved to cyclone shelters to escape a powerful storm barreling toward the eastern coast.

Cyclone Yaas is set to turn into a “very severe cyclonic storm” with sustained wind speeds of up to 177 kilometers per hour (110 miles per hour), the India Meteorological Department said. The cyclone is expected to make landfall early Wednesday in Odisha and West Bengal states.

India: Centre using Delhi Police to intimidate Twitter

New Delhi, May 24 (PTI) The CPI(M) on Monday alleged that the central government was using the Delhi Police to "intimidate" Twitter for "political purposes"

The Delhi Police's Special Cell on Monday served a notice to Twitter India in connection with a probe into a complaint about an alleged 'COVID toolkit' and asked it to share information based on which it had classified a related tweet by BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra as "manipulated media", officials said.

Mumbai, May 25 (PTI) Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Tuesday alleged that social media or 'toolkits' were used by the BJP to target opponents, adding that when it faced a backlash, it put pressure through various ways.

Raut made the comments while talking to reporters here in connection with a notice sent by the Delhi Police to Twitter India over the probe into a complaint about an alleged 'COVID toolkit'.

India To Brace For Another Cyclone Yaas

NEW DELHI, May 24 (NNN-PTI) – A Week after cyclone Tauktae wreaked havoc and left behind a trail of destruction, India is bracing for another cyclone, Yaas, officials said today.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone will make landfall at north Odisha – West Bengal, between Paradip and Sagar Island on Wednesday evening.

India: Guj communal clash: FIR registered against over 2,000 people

Gir Somnath, May 24 (PTI) Police have registered an FIR against nearly 2,000 unidentified people on charges of attempt to murder and rioting after members of two communities clashed with each other here in Gujarat, leaving six policemen and around a dozen other people injured, an official said on Monday.

The FIR also names 47 other persons for similar offences in connection with the incident that took place on Sunday, he said.
