India: Godrej Group headed for family split

New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) The USD 4.1 billion Godrej Group, spanning from soaps and home appliances to real estate, is headed for a split between the brothers, sources aware of the matter said, citing external advice the family has sought for an amicable division of the 124-year-old conglomerate.

At present, the group is led by veteran industrialist Adi Godrej (79), who is its chairman. His brother Nadir Godrej is the chairman of Godrej Industries as well as Godrej Agrovet.

India: Serum Institute seeks DCGI nod for Covid vaccine Covovax

New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) The Serum Institute of India on Friday sought permission from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to manufacture COVID-19 vaccine Covovax for restricted use in emergency situations at its Manjari manufacturing site, official sources said.

The company has submitted interim phase 2/3 clinical study report on Indian adults, the interim report of Novavax UK and USA-Mexico phase-3 clinical study and response to the queries raised by the DCGI office, along with its application.

India: Man held for posing as Union minister

Bareilly (UP), Oct 29 (PTI) A clerk of a school here was arrested on Friday for impersonating as a union minister and calling the SSP to favour a man in a property case, police said.

Niresh Verma, who called the SSP to favour Lotan Singh in the case involving a dispute over a plot, posed as Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar.

The accused had allegedly taken Rs 20 lakh from Singh to help him, police said.

A luxury car with "Bharat Sarkar" written on it was recovered from the accused.

India's first manned ocean mission 'Samudrayan' launched

Chennai, Oct 29 (PTI) India's first manned ocean mission 'Samudrayan' was launched here on Friday by Union Minister Jitendra Singh and with this the nation joined an elite club of nations having such underwater vehicles for carrying out subsea activities.

The nation has made huge progress in science and technology and when an Indian goes up into space as part of the Gaganyaan programme, another would dive deep into the ocean, the Minister said.

India: Pawar decries trolling of Muslim players after loss to Pakistan

Mumbai, Oct 29 (PTI) NCP chief and former ICC chairman Sharad Pawar on Friday described the trolling and abuse faced by some Indian players on social media after the loss to Pakistan in a T20 World Cup match as "indecent".

Some players, especially pacer Mohammad Shami, were targeted on social media following the loss.

It is my appeal to the so-called cricket lovers that they should refrain from discouraging players with such criticism," Pawar said during an event here.

India: UP Man held for kidnapping, raping minor in UP's Ballia

Ballia (UP), Oct 30 (PTI) A 22-year-old man here has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a minor, police said Saturday.

The accused and the victim belong to different communities and are residents of the same village, they said.

The 14-year-old girl was allegedly abducted on October 20, they added.

On the complaint of her father, a case of kidnapping was filed against the man on October 25 at Phephna police station, Station House Officer (SHO) Sunil Chandra Tiwari said.

India: 15-yr-old girl raped by uncle in Punjab

Hoshiarpur (Pb), Oct 30 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her uncle in a village under Mahilpur Police Station here, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place in February this year but the victim revealed her ordeal to her mother after she became pregnant.

The accused identified as Jasbir Singh allegedly raped the victim when she was alone at home and her mother was away for work, police said, adding that he has been arrested.

Suicides rise by 10 pct across India during COVID-19 pandemic in 2020: report

NEW DELHI, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- A report released by India's National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said suicides in the country showed an increase of 10 percent in 2020 amid the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the report released on Thursday, daily wage earners, the self-employed and housewives had the highest numbers among those who took their own lives.

"A total of 153,052 suicides were reported in the country during 2020 showing an increase of 10.0 percent in comparison to 2019," the report said.
