India: Jolt for BJP ahead of civic polls in WB, 3 leaders rejoin TMC

Kolkata, Feb 13 (PTI) Three BJP leaders, who had withdrawn their nominations for polls to the Garulia Municipality in West Bengal, on Sunday made their way back to the Trinamool Congress, voicing grievance over the saffron party's style of functioning.

Polls to 108 municipalities, including Garulia, are scheduled to be held on February 27.

The three leaders - former MLA Sunil Singh, his son Aditya and Garulia Municipality's ex-chairperson Saurabh Singh - had withdrawn their nominations on Saturday.

India: A girl in hijab will be country's PM one day: Owaisi

Lucknow, Feb 13 (PTI) A girl wearing Hijab will become the prime minister of the country one day, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has said amid the controversy over Muslim women's headscarves.

"If a girl decides to wear Hijab and asks her parents to do so and when her parents allow her to wear it, who can stop her from wearing it? We shall see, Inshallah," Owaisi is heard saying in a 43-second video of his address in an election rally.

India: Karnataka hijab row: High schools reopen in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Feb 14 (PTI) High schools in Karnataka reopened on Monday after being shut from last Wednesday following untoward incidents in parts of the State over the hijab row.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been imposed in sensitive areas in the districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, and Bengaluru.

Kanpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Muslim girls feel safe under the administration of the Yogi Adityanath led government here on Monday.

India To Participate In Singapore Air Show-2022

NEW DELHI, Feb 13 (NNN-PTI) – India’s indigenous light combat aircraft (LCA), will be showcased at the “Singapore Air Show-2022,” to be held from Feb 15 to 18, said an official statement, issued by the Ministry of Defence, yesterday.

A 44-member contingent of Indian Air Force (IAF) has reached Changi International Airport in Singapore, to participate in the air show, added the statement.

The “Singapore Air Show” is a biennial event which provides a platform for global aviation industry, to showcase their products.

India: Poll campaigning ends in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, Feb 12 (PTI) Campaigning came to an end on Saturday for the 70 Assembly seats of Uttarakhand going to polls on February 14 with a host of star campaigners, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, holding a series of rallies in support of their party candidates.

India: Outspoken industrialist Rahul Bajaj dies at 83

Pune, Feb 12 (PTI) Eminent industrialist and former chairman of the Bajaj group, Rahul Bajaj, who put Indian industry on the world map and was known for his outspokenness, died on Saturday due to age-related illness, according to a group official.

Bajaj (83), who stood down from his position of non-executive director and chairman of Bajaj Auto on April 30 last year and remained as the Chairman Emeritus, was not keeping well for some time and passed away at around 2:30 pm on Saturday. His last rites will be held on Sunday, the official said.

India: 9 Maoists held in Jharkhand, arms recovered

Chaibasa (Jharkhand), Feb 12 (PTI) Nine Maoists, who were allegedly involved in the attack on former BJP MLA Gurucharan Nayak last month, have been arrested with arms and ammunition from West Singhbhum district, a senior police officer said on Saturday.

Some of their sympathisers, too, have been taken into custody, he said.

Nayak had narrowly escaped a Maoist attack on January 4 but the naxals slit the throats of two policemen guarding him in Jheelruwa village here, and escaped with their AK-47 rifles.

India: No outsiders in poll bound areas in Odisha prior to polling: SEC

Bhubaneswar, Feb 12 (PTI) The State Election Commssion, Odisha Saturday issued a new circular for the coming panchayat election prohibiting the presence of outsiders and political leaders in the poll-bound areas after campaigning.

All outsiders will have to leave the poll-bound areas by February 14 evening when campaigning for the first phase of election on February 16 ends, State Election Commissioner A P Padhi.

He spoke after holding a review meeting on rural and urban polls in the virtual mode with district collectors.

India: BJP MLA booked for violating poll code in UP

Ballia (UP), Feb 12 (PTI) Bairiya's BJP MLA Surendra Singh, contesting the UP assembly election as a Vikasheel Insaan Party ticket after quitting his earlier party, has been booked for allegedly violating the model code of conduct.

A case has been registered against Singh and his 100 unidentified supporters at the Haldi police station for violating the poll code during electioneering, police sources said on Saturday.

The FIR has been lodged under various sections of the Epidemic Act and the matter is being investigated, they said.
