India: Woman abducted, gang-raped in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Mar 6 (PTI) A woman studying in a college here was allegedly abducted, taken to Delhi and gang-raped by five people, police said on Sunday.

They said a case has been registered against the accused based on a complaint lodged by the woman's family, and she was sent for a medical examination.

According to the complaint, the woman was abducted outside the college in Khatoli town on Friday and taken to Delhi in a car where she was gang-raped, SHO Dharmendra Kumar said.

India: SP-led alliance to form government in UP: Akhilesh

Lucknow, Mar 6 (PTI) Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said the alliance led by his party will emerge victorious in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls and will work to safeguard the rights and honour of the people of the state.

In a statement issued here, he urged people to vote in large numbers in the seventh and final phase of the election on Monday to save democracy and the Constitution.

In the seventh phase of the election, voting will be held on 54 Assembly seats spread over nine districts.

India: Four cow vigilantes injured in clash: Mathura police

Mathura, Mar 6 (PTI) Four people sustained injuries in a clash after they visited the home of a local resident, alleging that beef was stored there, police said here on Sunday.

The incident took place in the Manoharpura area under the Kotwali police station when members of the Gaurakhshak Dal, a cow vigilante group, knocked at the door of a local resident.

They alleged that beef was stored in the house, leading to an altercation and a scuffle.

"Four vigilantes were injured in the incident," SP (City) Martand Prakash Singh said.

Indian PM Modi to speak to Putin

New Delhi, Mar 7 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday afternoon, official sources said.

The telephonic talks will follow Modi's scheduled conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Modi's interaction with the two leaders comes amid India's all out efforts to evacuate its nationals, mostly students, from Ukraine, facing attack from Russia.

Modi had spoken to Putin earlier too when the war began.

Over 1,200 Got Sick After Eating At Wedding In India

NEW DELHI, Mar 6 (NNN-PTI) – More than 1,200 people were sickened or hospitalised, after eating at a wedding, in the western Indian state of Gujarat, local media reported yesterday.

The guests, mostly locals, consumed food at the wedding of a local Congress leader’s son, in the Mehsana district on Friday, about 61 km north of Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat.

The incident triggered panic in the area.

According to a statement issued by the office of the Mehsana collectorate, the patients’ situation “is improving.”

Modi calls India second largest mobile phone manufacturer in world

NEW DELHI, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday said India is emerging as a global leader in sectors that were previously considered out of reach, such as mobile phone manufacturing.

"India has become the second largest mobile manufacturer in the world," Modi said. "Seven years ago there were only two mobile manufacturing companies in India. Today more than 200 manufacturing units are engaged in this work."

Modi made the comments in his address to the inaugural Golden Jubilee celebration of Symbiosis University in Pune.

Indian Navy successfully test-fires Indo-Russian BrahMos missile

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) The Indian Navy on Saturday said it has successfully test-fired the advanced version of the BrahMos missile, demonstrating the combat readiness of its frontline platforms.

A Navy spokesperson said the missile hit the target with pin-point accuracy.

"The long-range precision strike capability of advanced version of the BrahMos missile was successfully validated," the official said.

Jaipur, Mar 5 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday said there is a need to think out of the box to increase economic activities rapidly and create more employment opportunities.

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) Seeking to connect people with nature, a yoga session was held on Saturday in a park near the Yamuna bank here as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, DDA officials said.

The event at the Golden Jubilee Park, Asita West near Old Railway Bridge, was hosted in a bid to revive the ancient connection of the Yamuna river with people by bringing more and more people closer to nature.

India: Rape-murder case: SC stays operation of death sentence

New Delhi, Mar 6 (PTI) The Supreme Court has stayed operation of the death sentence awarded to a man convicted for raping and murdering an 11-year-old girl in Dehradun in 2018.

The apex court, which was hearing an appeal filed by the convict against the January 2020 verdict of the Uttarakhand High Court which had confirmed the death penalty awarded to him by a trial court, directed that psychological evaluation of the appellant be done and its report be placed before it.
