Shahbaz Sharif elected Pakistan’s Prime Minister

NEW DELHI, April 11. /TASS/: Leader of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) Shahbaz Sharif has been elected Pakistan’s 23rd Prime Minister.

The voting took place at the National Assembly (342-seat lower parliament house) on Monday and was telecast by local television channels.

Sharif won 174 votes.

Shahbaz Sharif, 70, a younger brother of Nawaz Sharif, who was Pakistan’s Prime Minister three times, was nominated by opposition parties on Sunday. He will be sworn into office later on Monday.

India: Cong leaders to meet to prep for Chintan Shivir

New Delhi, Apr 10 (PTI) After the party's drubbing in the recent assembly elections in five states, top Congress leaders will soon meet at a 'Chintan Shivir' to deliberate on measures for reviving the organisation at the grassroots level and address fresh challenges.

Sources said the party has convened a meeting of its general secretaries and in-charges on Tuesday to work out modalities for the conclave, which is likely to be held in Rajasthan.

India: Yechury re-elected as CPI(M) General Secy

Kannur(Ker), Apr 10 (PTI) Senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury was re-elected as the General Secretary of the party for the third consecutive time here on Sunday.

Speaking to the delegates after being re-elected to the top post at CPI(M)'s 23rd Party Congress, Yechury said the principal task of the party was to isolate and defeat the BJP, which is pursuing the Hindutva communal agenda of the fascistic RSS.

India: Kuki National Army militant arrested in Manipur, firearm seized

Imphal, Apr 10 (PTI) A militant belonging to proscribed outfit Kuki National Army (KNA) has been arrested in Manipur's Bishnupur district and a pistol seized from his possession, police said on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, police conducted vehicle checking and frisking at Torbung Bazaar on Saturday night, during which two men riding a motorcycle attempted to flee, an officer said.

Police chased the duo and nabbed one of them while the other managed to escape, he said, adding that a 7.65 mm pistol was seized from his possession.

India: BJP student wing ABVP alleged to create violence in JNU over non-veg food

New Delhi, Apr 10 (PTI) Two groups of students clashed at the Kaveri hostel in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here on Sunday, police said.

While the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) alleged that the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members stopped students from eating non-vegetarian food in the hostel and "created a violent atmosphere", the ABVP denied the charge and claimed that "'Leftists" obstructed a puja programme organised at the hostel on Ram Navami festival.

Delhi auto and cab drivers demand subsidy on CNG prices

New Delhi, Apr 11 (PTI) Hundreds of auto, taxi and cab drivers staged a protest at the Delhi secretariat on Monday demanding subsidy on CNG prices.

The also threatened to go on indefinite strike from April 18 if their demand is not met. The protest was held under the aegis of Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh.

However, many auto, taxis and cabs were seen plying on city roads despite the protest.

India: Will enter politics if people want: Robert Vadra

Indore, Apr 11 (PTI) Congress president Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra has said he is ready to enter politics "if people want" and this will allow him to serve them in a major way.

Speaking to a local YouTube channel on Sunday after offering prayers at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Robert Vadra (53), the husband of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, said he understands politics.

India: Hate, violence weakening country: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Apr 11 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday urged all Indians to stand together to secure a just and inclusive India, saying hate and violence are weakening the country.

His remarks came a day after communal clashes broke out in Himmatnagar and Khambhat cities of Gujarat during Ram Navami processions, leaving one person dead, and also violence in the JNU campus over serving of non-vegetarian food on the festival.
