India: Statistics not parameter for crime control: UP CM

Lucknow, Jun 20 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Thursday said "statistics are not a parameter for crime control" and faith of the people is the actual standard.

Chairing a review meeting of the Home department here, he referred to recent incidents of crime in the state and said, "Statistics are not a parameter for crime control. The actual standard is the faith of people, and we have to prove ourselves on this front."

India: Yoga day celebrated in UP

Lucknow, Jun 21 (PTI) The International Yoga Day was Friday observed across Uttar Pradesh, with Governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attending the main programme in the state capital.

The main programme was held at the Raj Bhawan in the state capital.

BJP state vice-president Vidyasagar Sonkar said International Yoga Day functions have been organised across the state and in almost all districts.

UP ministers joined the functions in their respective districts.

India: Police await medical report in rape case

Kolkata, Jun 21 (PTI) The police are waiting for the medical test reports of a minor girl, who was allegedly raped by her neighbour's relative inside her accomodation at Fort William, the Eastern Command headquarter of the Indian Army here, a senior officer said.

The test results are awaited. It will help us in our investigation. Hopefully, we will get the report by today, the police officer said.

The police has been grilling the accused, identified as Sagar Mallick.

US-India trade war - mulling caps on H-1B visas

United States is considering caps on H-1B work visas to about 15% of the quota for nations that force foreign companies to store data locally.

The warning comes as trade dispute between the US and India has resulted in a recent tit-for-tat tariff actions. India has imposed higher tariffs on some U.S. goods from Sunday in an apparent response to Washington’s withdrawal of a key trade privilege for New Delhi, and a higher tariffs on its steel and aluminum export.

Himalayan ice melting at 'scary' levels

20 June 2019; DW: Satellite images demonstrate that the Himalayan glaciers are melting at twice the speed they were before the turn of the century.

The Asian mountain range has been losing ice at a rate of about 1% a year since 2000, according to a study published Wednesday in Science Advances.

That equates to a decrease in size by more than a foot-and-a-half (50 centimeters) each year — double the rate of the previous 25 years.

Couple's argument created scene on road

Kanpur: Was it not a huband-wife argument? She raised her voice for son's upbringing but the husband did not relent. 

It was reported that her married life began to worsen after a few months. She alleged that she had to face wrath of her husband and mother-in-law on some or another matters. 

On Thursday afternoon the dispute was openly seen on the road in Kidwai Nagar here. Although the police tried to control the enraged wife but of no avail. Later some workers of Manila Sakhi Kendra brought her wrath down anyhow. She was sent to the home after their intervention. 

India: 7 children drown after van falls into canal in Lucknow

Lucknow, Jun 20; PTI/GANASHAKTI: At least seven children were feared drowned after a pick-up van fell into the Indira canal in Nagram area here, district officials said Thursday.

The van carrying 29 people, who were returning from a marriage ceremony in neighbouring Barabanki district, fell into the canal late Wednesday night, Lucknow District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma said, adding that 22 of them have been rescued.

India: Ex-Gujarat cop Sanjiv Bhatt gets life

Jamnagar, June 20;  IANS/GANASHAKTI: A Gujarat court on Thursday sentenced sacked IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt to life imprisonment in a three-decade-old custodial death case, finding him guilty of murder.

Jamnagar District and Sessions Court Judge D.M. Vyas also awarded similar penalty to police constable Pravinsinh Jhala.

The verdict came after the Supreme Court last week rejected Bhatt's application seeking fresh examination of witnesses in the case, contending that this was key to arrive at a proper judgment.

India: SP leader abducted, killed by Naxal terrorists

Bijapur, Jun 19 (PTI) A Samajwadi Party (SP) leader was abducted and killed by Naxals in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said on Wednesday.

Santosh Punem, who was also a contractor, was abducted by ultras late Tuesday evening from his construction site in Marimalla village where he had gone to supervise some road- related work, Superintendent of Police Divyang Patel said.

Some locals spotted his body lying in a pool of blood at the nearby Marimalla hills on Wednesday morning and informed the police.

India: Cong to skip all-party meet on simultaneous polls

New Delhi, Jun 19 (PTI) The Congress will skip the all-party meeting convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 'one nation, one election' issue as it is opposed to the idea of holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections, sources said on Wednesday.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the party's top leaders in the Parliament after consultations with various other parties.

Leaders of a number of other parties have already decided to skip the meeting as a majority of them are opposed to the idea.
