Indian Rupee slips 23 paise to 71.66 vs USD in early trade

Mumbai, Aug 20 (PTI) The rupee opened on a weak note and fell 23 paise to 71.66 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday amid rising crude oil prices and unabated foreign fund outflows.

On Monday, the rupee had tumbled 29 paise to close at an over six-month low of 71.43 against the US dollar amid growing worries over economic slump.

India: Chandrayaan 2 successfully enters orbit around Moon

Bengaluru, Aug 20 (PTI) In a major milestone for India's Moon mission, the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft successfully entered the lunar orbit on Tuesday.

Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) maneuver was completed successfully at 0902 hours as planned, using the onboard propulsion system, the Bengaluru headquartered space agency said in a statement.

"The duration of maneuver was 1,738 seconds. With this, Chandrayaan-2 was successfully inserted into a Lunar orbit," ISRO said.

Authorities make more arrests in Indian Kashmir to deter protests

SRINAGAR, India (Reuters) - Security forces detained 30 people overnight in Indian Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar, local officials said on Tuesday, seeking to keep a tight lid on protests over the federal government’s decision to strip the region of its autonomy.

Crowds have demonstrated frequently in the city despite a severe clampdown on phone and internet services, a ban on public gatherings and detentions of hundreds of political leaders and separatists who have long campaigned for secession from India.

13 Dead, 20 Injured In India As Container Trailer Collides With Bus

MUMBAI, India, Aug 19 (NNN-PTI) – Thirteen people died and 20 others were injured, when a container trailer collided with a state transport bus, at Nimgul, in India’s western state of Maharashtra, 391 km from Mumbai, at 10:30 p.m. local time Sunday night, police official said.

The injured have been admitted to hospital, with 11 of them in critical condition.

The drivers of both vehicles died in the accident, as the collision was head-on, said the local police official.

India: Four Naxal terrorists surrender in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Aug 19 (PTI) Four Naxals, including a couple, surrendered before police in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Monday, police said.

The cadres, two of them carrying cash rewards on their heads, turned themselves in before Bijapur Superintendent of Police Divyang Patel and Deputy Inspector General (CRPF) Komal Singh, they said.

India largest SO2 emitter in world: Greenpeace

New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) India is the world's largest emitter of anthropogenic sulphur dioxide, which is produced from coal burning, and greatly contributes to air pollution, a study claimed on Monday.

According to an analysis of a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) data released by environmental NGO Greenpeace on Monday, India has more than 15 per cent of all anthropogenic sulphur dioxide (SO2) hotspots in the world detected by the OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) satellite.

India: SC grants CBI 2 more weeks to complete probe in accident case involving Unnao rape survivor

New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday granted two more weeks' time to the CBI to complete the ongoing investigation in a road accident case in which the Unnao rape survivor and her lawyer have sustained critical injuries.

A bench comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose extended the time for completing the probe after the CBI moved an application seeking four more weeks on the ground that the statements of the rape survivor and her lawyer have not been recorded so far.

India: Credit demand subdued, economy needs stimulus: SBI Chairman

Kolkata, Aug 18 (PTI) State Bank of India (SBI) Chairman Rajnish Kumar on Sunday said credit demand remains subdued and there is a need for stimulus in the economy.

Though lack of credit demand exists in the economy, there is no supply-side constraint as the public sector banks are more or less well-capitalised, he said.

"Demand for credit in the economy is subdued. There is a need for stimulus in the economy", Kumar told reporters here.
