India: Christian religious leader held for raping woman

Palghar, Sep 27 (PTI) A Christian religious leader from Vasai has been arrested for allegedly raping a 21-year- old woman from his community, police said on Friday.

The accused, identified as Glen Subhash D'Cruz (41), was arrested on Thursday for sexually assaulting the woman on multiple occasions from 2018 to August this year, police said.

"As the woman was facing some family problems, she had approached the accused last year to share her woes with him.

India: Gangraped college student names driver as main accused

Bhawanipatna/Bhubaneswar, Sep 27 (PTI) The college student who was gangraped in Odisha's Kalahandi district nearly two weeks ago, on Friday named a bus driver as the main culprit, prompting the police to launch a fresh probe.

The fresh allegation by the 22-year-old woman came two days after the police arrested six persons, including a juvenile, for allegedly raping her in a forest near Junagarh on September 14. Three others were also apprehended for uploading a video of the act on social media.

India: HC bans animal sacrifice in all Tripura temples

Agartala, Sep 27 (PTI) The Tripura High Court on Friday banned sacrifice of animals or birds for religious reasons in all temples of the state.

A division bench of Chief Justice Sanjoy Karol and Justice Arindam Lodh pronounced the order after hearing a public interest litigation.

"No person including the State shall be allowed to sacrifice any animal/bird within the precincts of any of the temples within the State of Tripura," the order said.

India: MTech students in IITs will now have to pay more fees

New Delhi, Sep 27 (PTI) MTech students in IITs will now have to pay more with the IIT Council on Friday approving a fee increase to bring it to the level of BTech courses.

The Council chaired by Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal also approved the 'tenure track pathway' to decide whether a new faculty member is going 'up' or 'out' after a fifth year review of his or her performance.

India: Narada case: BJP leader Mukul Roy appears before CBI

Kolkata, Sep 28 (PTI) BJP leader Mukul Roy on Saturday appeared before the CBI probe team to face questioning in connection with Narada tapes scandal, agency sources said.

Roy had been asked to appear in the probe agency's office on Friday. But he did not go there citing "preoccupations" and sought more time.

India: Man held for raping his 11-year-old daughter

Jaipur, Sep 28 (PTI) A man has been arrested for allegedly raping his 11-year-old daughter in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district, police said on Saturday.

Pragat Singh, a resident of Makkasar area of the district, on Thursday asked her younger daughter to go out and then took her elder daughter in a room where he beat her and raped her, Mahila Thana police said.

India's Rs 88 lakh crore debt burden worrisome: Cong

New Delhi, Sep 28 (PTI) India had a "worrisome" debt burden of over Rs 88 lakh crore at the first financial quarter of 2019 with the government apparently having no inkling to deal with the country's economic slowdown, the Congress said on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also said the debt has risen by 4 per cent compared to the last quarter.

India: Man killed by Naxal terrorists in C'garh

Sukma, Sep 28 (PTI) A man was killed allegedly by Naxals in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, police said on Saturday.

As per the preliminary information, the victim, identified as Muchaki Linga, who worked as a 'shikshadoot' (education ambassador), was killed by suspected Naxals at his village Benpalli under Jagargunda police station area, Sukma Superintendent of Police Shalabh Sinha said.

New Delhi, Sep 28 (PTI) Suspended paediatrician Kafeel Khan, who has been absolved of charges of medical negligence and corruption in connection with the Gorakhpur's BRD hospital tragedy, on Saturday demanded he be reinstated with due honour.

Addressing mediapersons at the Press Club of India here, he reiterated the Uttar Pradesh government should apologise to the families of the children who died and provide compensation to the kin.

India: Stealth frigate Nilgiri launched for sea trials

Mumbai, Sep 28 (PTI) Stealth frigate INS Nilgiri, the first ship of the P-17A frigates, was launched at the dockyard of the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) here on Saturday.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's wife Savitri Singh, as part of traditions, launched INS Nilgiri into the sea for further trials.

Besides Rajnath Singh, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and other officials were present on the occasion.
