India: Woman burnt alive over dowry in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Oct 4 (PTI) A woman was allegedly burnt to death over dowry in Saidham Colony in the city, police said on Friday.

The incident happened on Thursday evening in Civil Lines police station area here.

India: Woman gets 7 years in jail for sexually abusing 5-year-old

Thane, Oct 4 (PTI) A Thane court has sentenced a woman to seven years rigourous imprisonment for sexually abusing the five-year-old daughter of her live-in partner.

District Judge D G Murumkar also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on the 33-year-old woman, a resident of Mumbra town in Thane district.

In the order on October 1, the judge observed that additional public prosecutor Ujjwala Moholkar successfully proved all charges against the woman under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

India: RBI cuts rates by 0.25%

Mumbai, Oct 4 (PTI) The Reserve Bank on Friday cut its key rates by 0.25 per cent to boost economy from six-year low saying reduction was necessary to revive growth.

With first quarter GDP growth plunging to 5 per cent, the RBI cut its estimate of economic growth in the current fiscal to 6.1 per cent from its earlier estimate of 6.9 per cent.

The repo rate, at which it lends to the system, has been brought down to 5.15 per cent to help reduce borrowing costs for home and auto loans, which are now directly linked to this benchmark.

India: Slump in economy and sponsorship of Durga puja, loses its shine

Kolkata, Oct 4 (PTI) The economic slowdown has dimmed the lights of Bengal's biggest festival this time, forcing Durga puja organizers to scale down celebrations due to shrinking sponsorship.

Not just small-budget pujas, big-ticket ones have also curtailed their budget by nearly 15% to 30%, mostly compromising on marquee decoration, according to organisers.

On an average, setting up a theme-based marquee for the five-day fiesta, replete with safety arrangements and basic amenities, costs anything between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 30 crore in Bengal.

Delhi Metro's Dwarka-Najafgarh corridor inaugurated

New Delhi, Oct 4 (PTI) The over 4.2 km-long Grey Line of the Delhi Metro, which will connect urban village area of Najafgarh to the rapid transit network, was inaugurated on Friday.

Union Housing and Urban Affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal flagged off a train on the corridor. Passenger services will commence from the evening.

India: AMUTA asks Centre to restore normalcy in Kashmir

Aligarh (UP), Oct 4 (PTI) Aligarh Muslim University Teachers Association (AMUTA) has asked the Centre to take urgent steps to restore normalcy in Kashmir.

The Executive committee of AMUTA in a resolution passed on Thursday said the only way forward in the valley is by "winning over the hearts of the Kashmiri people".

The resolution also cautioned the government on legitimate concerns of the people over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise.

Nearly 1,900 dead in monsoon rains, floods across India

New Delhi, Oct 4 (PTI) Nearly 1,900 people lost their lives and another 46 were reported missing this monsoon season in rains and floods which affected more than 25 lakh in 22 states, Union Home Ministry officials said on Friday.

The highest 382 people died in Maharashtra, followed by 227 deaths in West Bengal in rains, floods and landslides that hit as many as 357 districts in the country.

Intel on Jaish ‘Terrorists’ in Delhi, planning strike

Based on ‘Intelligence sources’,  four Jaish-e-Mohammed ‘terrorists’ have entered Delhi and are planning to strike during the festival season, in retaliation against the government's decision to end special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370. All four are said to be heavily armed.

Jaish-e-Mohammed is alleged to be a Pakistan-based outfit, which allegedly sent a threat letter in Hindi, to Bureau of Civil Aviation Security dated 10 September.

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Arrives Delhi

New Delhi, Oct  3; GANASHAKTI: Prime minister Sheikh Hasina arrives New Delhi on Thursday morning to join the World Economic Forum (WEF) Summit and hold meetings with top Indian leaders, reports UNB.

A VVIP flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the prime minister and her entourage departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8:15am. The flight landed at Palam Air Force Station, New Delhi at 9:45am (local time).

A red carpet was rolled out for the prime minister at the airport.

India: Bihar rain death toll soars to 73, many areas inundated even after a week

Patna, Oct 3; GANASHAKTI: The death toll in rain-related incidents in Bihar soared to 73 on Thursday even as forces involved in relief and rescue operations fished out rotting corpses from water-logged areas in several places.

The torrential rain that took place between September 27 and 30 has created a flood-like situation in 15 districts of the state, including the state capital.
