India: SC orders Fadnavis to prove majority in floor test on Wednesday

New Delhi, Nov 26 (PTI) The floor test for Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to prove his majority in the assembly will be conducted on Wednesday, the Supreme Court has directed.

Stating that it is necessary to have a floor test to avoid horse trading, the apex court on Tuesday also asked Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to appoint a pro-tem speaker and ensure that all elected members of the House are sworn in on Wednesday itself.

1st consignment of onions from Egypt to reach India next month

NEW DELHI, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The first consignment of 6,090 tonnes of onions procured by the Indian government from Egypt will reach Mumbai port in the first week of December, officials said on Tuesday.

"Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation of India (MMTC) has placed an order for the first consignment of 6090 MT of onions from Egypt which will be arriving at Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mumbai," said a statement from India's federal ministry of food and consumer affairs.

India: LS speaker may suspend two Cong MPs for storming Well of House

New Delhi, Nov 25: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla may suspend Congress MPs Hibi Eden and T N Prathapan for storming the Well of the House and obstructing Parliament proceedings by shouting slogans to protest against the swearing-in of a BJP-led government in Maharashtra, sources said on Monday.

Congress leaders carrying placards with messages like "save Constitution" and "save democracy" and a black banner which said "stop murder of democracy" jostled with the marshals.

India: If Naxal violence continues, govt will give befitting reply: Rajnath

Pandu (Jharkhand), Nov 24 (PTI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday warned Naxalites to abjure violence, saying a befitting reply would be given if they did not do so.

The warning comes in the wake of violence by the left wing extremists in Latehar and Palamau districts of Jharkhand since Friday, in which four policemen and two persons, including a local BJP leader, were killed.

Mumbai, Nov 24 (PTI) A day after his stunning volte face, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Sunday said he was still with the NCP, adding Sharad Pawar continued to be his leader.

In a series of tweets after thanking BJP leaders for their congratulatory messages, Ajit Pawar also said the "BJP- NCP alliance" will provide a stable government in Maharashtra for the next five years.

India: Delhi court dismisses complaint seeking FIR against Rahul

New Delhi, Nov 23 (PTI) A Delhi court on Saturday dismissed a complaint seeking an FIR against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly making defamatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016.

The court took into record an action taken report filed by Delhi Police which had said that no "cognisable offence" was made out against Gandhi.

The report said Gandhi allegedly made the defamatory statement against the prime minister for which a suit may be filed, but "no police action was made out".

India: SC asks Centre to produce governor's letters inviting BJP to form govt

New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Sunday asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to place before it on Monday morning the letters of the Governor recommending revocation of President's Rule and inviting Devendra Fadnavis to form government in Maharashtra.

A bench of Justices N V Ramana, Ashok Bhushan and Sanjiv Khanna also issued notices to the Centre and Maharashtra government on a petition filed by the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress combine against the Maharashtra Governor's decision to swear in Fadnavis as chief minister.

India: 7 of top-10 most valued domestic firms suffered Rs 76,164 cr loss

New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) Seven of the 10 most valued domestic firms suffered a combined erosion of Rs 76,164.3 crore in market capitalisation last week, with TCS taking the biggest knock.

From the top-10 pack, only Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), HDFC and SBI witnessed gains in their market valuation for the week ended Friday.

The market capitalisation (m-cap) of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) dropped Rs 39,118.6 crore to Rs 7,76,950.02 crore.
