India: J-K faces power shortage of 408 MW

Jammu, Dec 4 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a shortfall of 408 megawatts (MW) of power supply during the thick of winter, officials said on Wednesday.

The union territory is getting only 1,959 MW electricity against a demand of 2,367 MW, Commissioner-Secretary of Power Development Department Hirdesh Kumar said.

Against the average yearly restricted demand of 938 MW in Jammu region, the department provided 819 MW electricity, resulting in a shortfall of 120 MW, he said.

India: SC grants bail to Chidambaram in INX Media money laundering case

New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to Congress leader P Chidambaram in a money laundering case related to INX Media and directed that he could not leave the country without its prior permission nor speak to the media.

India: SC to hear after four weeks PIL seeking greater autonomy for ECI

New Delhi, Dec 3 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear after four weeks a PIL seeking that the chief election commissioner and election commissioners be appointed by a three-member collegium.

The collegium will comprise the prime minister, the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha and the chief justice of India.

India: Sacked from Ayodhya case, says Muslim parties' lawyer Rajeev Dhavan

New Delhi, Dec 3 (PTI) Senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan, who appeared for Muslim parties in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute case, on Tuesday said he has been sacked from the matter on the 'nonsensical' ground that he is unwell.

Dhavan, who posted the information on Facebook, said he is no longer involved in either the review or the case.

India: Revenue surplus over 5 yrs as Delhi has non-corrupt govt

New Delhi, Dec 3 (PTI) A day after the CAG report said that the Delhi government has maintained a revenue surplus over the last five years, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday asserted it was possible as the national capital has a "non-corrupt government".

Taking to Twitter, the chief minister said, "Five years of increased expenditure on schools, hospitals, water and power - all this while maintaining revenue surplus and improving Delhi's fiscal health...(sic)"

India: Swedish royal couple visits Jama Masjid, Red Fort

New Delhi, Dec 2 (PTI) King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, who are on a five-day visit to India, were given a guided tour of Jama Masjid and Red Fort on Monday.

"The Majesties were given a guided tour of the Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India, by Deputy Shahi Imam Syed Shaban Bukhari and historian Sohail Hashmi," the Embassy of Sweden tweeted.

India: Odisha cop suspended after rape survivor commits suicide

Baripada (Odisha), Dec 2 (PTI) A police personnel was suspended on Monday for negligence in duty, which allegedly led to a rape survivor committing suicide in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, officials said.

Inspector in-charge Sarat Chandra Mahalik, posted at Jharpokharia police station, was suspended following allegations of inaction on the complaint filed by the rape survivor, they said.

India: BJP govt has failed to ensure safety of women: Akhilesh

Lucknow Dec 2 (PTI) The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has failed to ensure women safety and it has no moral right to continue, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav alleged on Monday, citing several cases of crime against women in the state.

He also said those who are propagating the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign are not being able to check "inhuman activities".

"Women are feeling unsafe under the BJP government. Even minor girls are becoming victims of cruelty," Yadav said in a statement.

India: 45-year-old man arrested for raping minor

Kendrapara (Odisha), Dec 2 (PTI) Odisha Police Monday arrested a 45-year-old man on charges of allegedly raping a 9-year-old in Kendrapara district of Odisha, police said on Monday.

The incident took place on Sunday night at a village under Derabish police station limits of the district and both the accused and the victim hail from it, the police said.

India: SIT begins probe into Kunduli gangrape by uniformed men

Koraput (Odisha), Dec 2 (PTI) A special investigation team (SIT), constituted by Orissa High Court to look into the probe by the state CID into the alleged gangrape at Kunduli which took place two years ago, began its probe here on Monday, officials said.

The HC had passed the order nearly two weeks ago and a three-member SIT was formed to look into the gangrape which allegedly took place in October 2017.
