India: Stones thrown at Assam police chief's convoy in Guwahati

Guwahati, Dec 12 (PTI) Stones were thrown at Assam Police chief Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta's convoy on Thursday when he was touring the city, ravaged by violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The cavalcade was on the Guwahati-Shillong Road near Christian Basti where it was attacked. Stones were thrown at several vehicles in the convoy that was on its way from the Secretariat.

India: Catholic priest arrested for forgery in MP

Bhopal, Dec 12 (PTI) A Catholic priest has been arrested and sent to 15-day judicial custody on the alleged charges of forgery and cheating, police said on Thursday.

Father Anand Muttungal, the former spokesman and public relation officer of Catholic Church of Madhya Pradesh, was arrested and produced in court on Wednesday, inspector Hari Om Dixit of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) said.

Muttungal has been sent to judicial custody till December 26, he added.

Infosys faces another lawsuit in US

New Delhi, Dec 12 (PTI) US-based Schall Law Firm has said it will file a class action lawsuit against Infosys Ltd to recover losses suffered by investors in the wake of allegations of "unethical practices" at the Indian IT major.

In October, Infosys had informed the stock exchanges of having received anonymous whistleblower complaints alleging certain unethical practices by the top management.

India: Protest held in Bhopal against citizenship bill

Bhopal, Dec 12 (PTI) Braving untimely drizzle, members of an organisation staged a protest here on Thursday evening against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) alleging it was unconstitutional and communal in nature.

The protesters, members of the Madhya Pradesh Democratic Rights Forum (MPDRF), burnt copies of the bill at Board Office square and chanted slogans against the legislation approved by Parliament.

Massive protests against the bill have rocked the north-eastern states.

India: Guj State seeks Centre nod to sterlise leopards

Ahmedabad, Dec 12 (PTI) Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Thursday directed state officials to seek the Centre's permission for sterlising leopards to control their population and prevent incidents of man-animal conflict in the state.

As per the data released in the state Assembly, as many as 14 persons were killed while 71 were injured in leopard attacks in Junagadh and Amreli districts alone in the last two years, an official said.

India: CAB will not be implemented in Ker, says CM

Thiruvananthapuram/Kozhikode, Dec 12 (PTI) Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said the Citizenship (Amendment) bill, passed by Parliament, will not be implemented in the state, as hundreds of students of a local college in north Kerala took out a march and burnt the effigy of Home minister Amit Shah.

Guwahati, Dec 13 (PTI) Roads in Guwahati have virtually become impossible to navigate as street fires set up by people protesting against the contentious amended Citizenship Act turned the city's sky red.

Normal life in the city has been paralysed to the core as protesters are defying curfew and venturing out on the streets.

India: DMK protests against CAB, Udhayanidhi Stalin detained

Chennai, Dec 13 (PTI) DMK youth wing leader Udhayanidhi Stalin and scores of party workers were detained on Friday when they tried to stage a road blockade here while holding a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, police said.

Udhayanidhi, son of DMK president M K Stalin, led the protest at Saidapet.

Many activists were seen tearing copies of the Bill, which proposes citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

India: Girl raped by neighbour in UP's Mahoba district

Banda (UP), Dec 13 (PTI) A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped in the adjoining Mahoba district by her neighbour, police said on Friday.

The girl was alone in the house on November 21 when the neighbour, Rahul Paswan (22), allegedly raped her, Inspector Abhimanyu Singh Yadav said.

The accused had threatened her with dire consequences but she narrated her ordeal to her family on Thursday when the neighbour asked her to meet at a secluded place, Yadav said.

India-Japan summit in Guwahati postponed due to massive protest ocer CAB

New Delhi, Dec 13 (PTI) India announced on Friday that the annual summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe, which was scheduled to be held in Guwahati, has been postponed.

Abe was scheduled to arrive in Guwahati on Sunday on a three-day India visit to hold summit talks with Modi.

"With reference to the proposed visit of Japanese PM @AbeShinzo to India, both sides have decided to defer the visit to a mutually convenient date in the near future," Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Raveesh Kumar tweeted.
