China sanctions Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin for arms sales to Taiwan

BEIJING, Sept 15 (Reuters) - China will impose sanctions against U.S. aerospace and defence firms Northrop Grumman (NOC.N) and Lockheed Martin (LMT.N) for providing weapons to Taiwan, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Friday.

The sanctions are being enacted under China's Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law, ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a regular press briefing.

Chinese defence minister under investigation for corrupt procurement

Sept 15 (Reuters) - Defence Minister Li Shangfu, who has been missing from public view for more than two weeks, has been placed under investigation by Chinese authorities, according to 10 people familiar with the matter.

The investigation into Li relates to procurement of military equipment, according to a regional security official and three people in direct contact with the Chinese military. Reuters was unable to obtain details on which equipment purchases were under scrutiny.

U.S. helicopter maker announces new delivery to Chinese company

TIANJIN, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Bell Textron Inc. announced the upcoming delivery of a Bell 429 twin-engine helicopter to Shaanxi Helicopter Co., Ltd., one of the prominent players in China's helicopter sector, during the 6th China Helicopter Exposition held in north China's Tianjin Municipality.

This marks the addition of the fifth twin-engine aircraft to Shaanxi Helicopter's versatile fleet.

HONG KONG (AP) — The former CEO of Alibaba, Daniel Zhang, resigned as head of its cloud computing unit Monday in a surprise move as the Chinese e-commerce empire wraps up a leadership reshuffle.

Alibaba said it will invest $1 billion in a technology fund Zhang will establish to support the firm’s strategies for future growth.

Zhang stepped down on the same day he gave up his roles as Alibaba’s CEO and chairman.

China think tank says India is 'sabotaging' G20 for its own agenda

BEIJING, Sept 9 (Reuters) - India has been trying to take advantage of its role as the host of the G20 Summit to promote its own agenda and harm China's interests, a Chinese think tank affiliated with the country's top spy agency said on Saturday.

Backlash in China against draft law banning items that harm 'national spirit'

BEIJING, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Proposed changes to a Chinese public security law to criminalise comments, clothing or symbols that "undermine the spirit" or "harm the feelings" of the country have triggered the concern of legal experts, who say the amendments could be used arbitrarily.

The changes were first made public last week as part of a mandatory "soliciting opinion" process, as concerns mount about the increasingly authoritarian and nationalistic rule of President Xi Jinping.
